Join us to acknowledge IDAHOBIT 2024

Mildura Rural City Council is partnering with dozens of community agencies and services to mark International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) with a special event in the Langtree Mall this Friday, 17 May.

This inclusive and free event is open to all ages, with music, colour and a safe space on offer from 4pm.

The afternoon's activities will also include a flag-furling ceremony, a sausage sizzle, information stalls and a movie screening.

Councillor for Community Development and Gender Equity Helen Healy encouraged the community to help mark this important day in a respectful and inclusive way.

"Everyone in our community, regardless of race, sex or identity should have a fair and equitable opportunity to live healthy, safe and happy lives," Cr Healy said.

"As a Council we value the diverse range of identities, lifestyles and experiences of all members of our community.

"Inclusion and participation is key to building a strong community. We are committed to preserving the dignity of all people and to ensure services, facilities and public spaces are openly inviting and fully accessible."

Cr Healy said Council has been a proud and active IDAHOBIT participant for close to a decade and remained committed to celebrating diversity across our community.

"To further recognise the importance of this day, Council will fly the LGBTQIA+ pride progress flag at each of our Council service centres and at several key community locations across the region," Cr Healy said.

"Sustainability, gender equality, preventing family violence, access, inclusion and diversity came up consistently throughout the six-month engagement process to develop our last Council plan and 20-year Community Vision.

"Council's effort in addressing these issues is fundamental to our community's future, and we commit to them through our actions and advocacy.

"I certainly encourage those interested to come and help mark the occasion and enjoy a family-friendly afternoon celebrating inclusion and diversity in our community."

The May 17 event is being supported by Mildura Rural City Council, Northern Mallee Leaders, Headspace Mildura, Aligned Leisure, Anglicare Victoria, First Peoples of the Millewa-Mallee, Caring Souls Support Services, Mildura Base Public Hospital, MASP, Mildura City Heart, MDAS, Mallee Family Care, Mallee Sexual Assault Unit-Mallee Domestic Violence Services, Sunraysia Community Health Services, Skills and Jobs Centre, SuniTAFE and Value Care.
