The City of Santa Maria Mayor's Task Force on Youth Safety is coordinating a fun weekend of musical and theatrical productions for teens in grades 7 through 12. On Saturday, May 21st, teens will be transported to the Great American Melodrama in Oceano to enjoy an interactive theatrical production of the Mark of El Morro. The next day, teens are invited by the Santa Barbara Symphony to a unique reimagining of the jazz concerto, Riffing on Gershwin, taking place at the Granada Theatre in Santa Barbara.
Transportation to the venues will be provided from the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center, located at 600 South McClelland Street. The shuttles will depart at 1:00 p.m. and return at 6:00 p.m. Concessions will be purchased for all participants.
Pre-registration is required at www.cityofsantamaria.org/register, as space is limited. The Granada Theatre requires all patrons to wear masks and present picture identification. Additionally, the venue requires proof of vaccination or negative PCR COVID-19 test (samples must be collected within two days for PCR tests and within one day for antigen tests).
The mission of the Mayor's Task Force on Youth Safety is to prevent violence through safe and healthy programming. In partnership with the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department, resources and programs are offered to youth to deter their involvement in criminal activity, drug use, gang membership, and violence. Efforts include coordinating free recreational activities, organizing field trips, promoting the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center as a safe place, and offering employment, leadership, and professional development opportunities.
