Forbes Magazine Recognizes ARUP Among Nation’s Best Employers for Women

ARUP Laboratories' ongoing commitment to provide an environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging for all employees has earned the company recognition as one of Forbes magazine's Best Employers for Women 2022.

The Forbes ranking, first published online on Tuesday, July 26, places ARUP 236th on a list of 300 companies nationwide. Winners were chosen based on an independent survey of 50,000 employees, including 30,000 women, who currently work at companies with at least 1,000 employees in their U.S. operations. The survey, which was conducted by the research firm Statista, evaluated criteria that included:

  • General work topics. Respondents were asked their opinions on their employers' atmosphere, development opportunities, image, working conditions, salaries, and diversity.
  • Topics relevant to women. Women respondents were asked to rate employers' practices related to parental leave, family support, flexibility, representation, career opportunities, and pay equity.
  • Indirect recommendations. Respondents had the opportunity to evaluate other employers in their industries that stand out either negatively or positively with regard to diversity.
  • Diversity among executives/boards of directors. An index used for the ranking measured the percentage of representation by women on employers' executive committees and boards of directors.

"Creating a good working environment, where people are treated with mutual respect and support and where we emphasize balance in work, wellness, and family, is one of the Five Pillars of ARUP Culture," said Tracy George, MD, ARUP president and chief scientific officer. "Nearly 60% of ARUP's more than 4,600 employees are women, and we're pleased to be recognized as a great place for women to work and build their careers."

George, a hematopathologist who has earned international recognition for her work with mast cell disease, has been ARUP's president since September 2021, and is one of three women on ARUP's Executive Committee. The others are Chief Business Development Officer Julie Altwies and Quality Officer Margaret Coppin.

Throughout her career, George has been actively involved in efforts to encourage and help women and other underrepresented groups pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Most recently, she was a panelist discussing the topic in Salt Lake City at a Deep Tech Conference and at a special BioUtah/BioHive event for women.

Her efforts supplement those made by ARUP employee engagement groups (EEGs), including a Women in the Workplace EEG, in which all employees are invited to participate to help develop strong mentor relationships and address career and workplace challenges. The groups are an outgrowth of ARUP's Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, which offers educational resources and programs throughout the year to promote and celebrate the diversity of ARUP employees.

The newest Forbes ranking is just the latest recognition of ARUP as a great place to work. Forbes has previously recognized ARUP among the Best Employers by State, Best Midsize Employers, and Best Companies for Diversity. In addition, for four consecutive years, ARUP has been on Utah Business magazine's list of Best Companies to Work For in Utah.
