Clear the Way for a Clean Sweep

NORFOLK, VA- October has arrived and the leaves are already falling on yards, vehicles and streets. It's also the start of a busy season for the City of Norfolk's Street Sweeping team.

Regular sweeping removes pollutants like oil, grease, dirt and debris from roadways before getting washed into storm drains and waterways to form clogs and buildup that contributes to nuisance, often damaging flooding. Sweeping helps improve local water quality by preventing contaminants from ending up in the Elizabeth River and Chesapeake Bay and negatively impacting beaches and aquatic life.

Getting an effective, curb-to-curb sweep is a team effort with the Street Sweeping team, parking enforcement and Norfolk residents.

Here's what residents can do to help:

  • Find out the street sweeping schedule. Click here to search for sweeping day by street name and address.
  • By 9 a.m. on the scheduled street sweeping day, remove vehicles from the roadway so sweepers can get all the way to the curb line.
  • Remind neighbors about street sweeping days.

Different streets have different needs, and that's why parking is enforced on scheduled street sweeping days in many Norfolk neighborhoods. Red and white regulatory parking enforcement signs must be adhered to the day and times posted, even if sweepers have already cleaned the street. Vehicles parked in the street sweeping enforcement zone during the posted day and time are subject to citation.

In neighborhoods without street sweeping parking enforcement, residents are still required to move vehicles from the roadways so crews can get all the way to the curb line.
