Leipzig/Halle Airport: PortGround once again obtains IATA CEIV-Pharma certification

IATA, the trade association of the world's airlines, has once again awarded its CEIV Pharma quality seal to PortGround GmbH at Leipzig/Halle Airport. PortGround is part of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG and is a company that specialises in aircraft and freight handling. Leipzig/Halle Airport, which is Europe's third-largest cargo hub, is able to handle time-sensitive and temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical shipments in line with IATA standards because of its CEIV Pharma certification.

"The CEIV Pharma certification has been successfully broadening our business operations since 2020 and we're consistently developing them. Leipzig/Halle Airport has become a significant handling centre for temperature-sensitive, pharmaceutical and medical goods and it provides ideal conditions for shippers, freight forwarders and airlines thanks to its 24/7 operating permit for cargo flights and its direct links to the trans-European motorway and railway networks," says Alexander König, the Managing Director of PortGround GmbH, emphasising his point.

The international classification known as CEIV stands for Center of Excellence for Independent Validators in Pharmaceutical Logistics. It provides confirmation that companies are handling sensitive pharmaceutical goods in line with international standards.

This certification requires tough quality management standards, extensive process documentation and regular training sessions for all those involved in the procedures and the latter must be geared towards their individual work areas. It is also essential to have suitable infrastructure where the temperature is monitored at all times. Leipzig/Halle Airport has a refrigerated warehouse at its World Cargo Center and it is operated by PortGround GmbH; it is able to accommodate the entire temperature-sensitive freight from a Boeing 747 cargo plane, for example.

The World Cargo Center offers direct access to the apron areas and therefore guarantees short transport routes to and from planes and to trucks.

LEJ: the hub for express and e-commerce shipments as well as all types of freight charter operations

Freight volumes at Leipzig/Halle Airport, which is Europe's third-largest air cargo hub, rose from approximately 1.3 to almost 1.6 million tonnes in 2021, an increase of 15 percent. This set a new record high. The airport is DHL's largest hub anywhere in the world and is home to the first regional air cargo centre operated by Amazon Air in Europe. This means that LEJ is one of the most important hubs for express and e-commerce shipments.

Overall, more than 70 cargo airlines fly to the airport and operate a network of routes, which comprises more than 250 destinations around the globe. The airport registers as many as 1,300 take-offs and landings for cargo traffic every week.
More than 12,300 people currently work for Leipzig/Halle Airport or for companies and public authorities based there. They include about 9,500 working in the freight handling, cargo airlines, logistics and freight forwarding sectors alone.
