Landfill Expansion Secures Funding

The city has accepted more than $1.6 million in state funding to expand Pierre's Regional Landfill.

The money, specifically, will be used to assist with engineering and construction of a fourth cell at the landfill. Construction is expected in 2025 and the fourth cell is expected to provide disposal capacity for about 14 years. There is space for another ten cells to be developed once cell four reaches capacity.

The landfill serves approximately 40,000 people including communities and rural areas in seven different counties. The first cell at the City's current landfill was constructed in 2003; the most recent cell was completed in 2015.

As part of its Solid Waste Operations, the city operates a baling facility to provide uniform compaction of material, a recycling program to help limit solid waste disposal, as well as a rubble debris pit to dispose of construction materials.
