Presentation of Argentina's candidate to the Inter-American Juridical Committee of the OAS, Jimena de la Torre

Today, at Palacio San Martín, María Isabel Jimena de la Torre was introduced to Ambassadors and diplomatic representatives of the OAS Member States accredited to our country as Argentina's candidate to the Inter-American Juridical Committee (CJI).

The Deputy Foreign Minister, Ambassador Leopoldo Sahores, was in charge of opening the event, and was joined by the Undersecretary for American Affairs, Ambassador Mariano Vergara, and other Foreign Ministry officials.

During the event, Deputy Foreign Minister Sahores highlighted Argentina's historical commitment to the Inter-American system, as well as the candidate's vast experience in issues of interest for the Member States, such as institutional transparency and the separation of powers. Finally, he expressed his gratitude to the countries that have supported the candidacy.

For her part, de la Torre referred to her experience in matters such as institutional transparency and judicial independence, which is a fundamental pillar of the system for the protection of human rights, individual guarantees, and the liberties and property of citizens.

María Isabel Jimena de la Torre is a renowned Argentine lawyer and an expert in international taxation and the prevention of money laundering and terrorism financing. She has vast experience in the civil service, where she currently serves as member of the Judicial Council of the Argentine Republic. Argentina believes that, if elected, de la Torre will contribute to the progressive development and codification of the law.

The Committee is one of OAS main bodies, as it serves as an advisory body to the Organization on juridical matters. It is made up of eleven jurists, all of them nationals of Member States. Three new members of the CJI will be appointed for a four-year term at the 54th Regular Session of the General Assembly, to be held from 26 to 28 June in Asunción, Paraguay.
