Sinema & National Indian Impacted Schools Association Discuss How Impact Aid Strengthens Tribal Schools

Sinema, a member of the Impact Aid Caucus, secured over $1 billion in Impact Aid for Arizona tribes

WASHINGTON - Arizona senior Senator Kyrsten Sinema - a member of the bipartisan, bicameral Impact Aid Caucus - met with the National Indian Impacted Schools Association (NIISA) to discuss her continued support for the Impact Aid program and how the program makes a difference in Navajo communities like the Window Rock Unified School District.

"Through the Impact Aid program, we've delivered resources to Arizona schools in tribal communities so students can thrive and achieve their dreams," said Sinema, a member of the Impact Aid Caucus.

Throughout her time in Congress, Sinema has championed Arizona students and teachers. Since being in the Senate, Sinema helped secure over $1 billion in Impact Aid funding for Arizona tribes, which ensures schools on federal, military, and tribal lands are equipped to provide Arizona students with a quality education.

Impact Aid is a federal program that assists Arizona schools lacking revenue from local property tax due to being on federal tax-exempt lands. Tax-exempt lands include tribal lands, military bases, federal national parks, and other federal property. School districts rely on tax revenue from property taxes; Impact Aid makes up for the revenue loss, helping Arizona students thrive and succeed.

During the meeting, Sinema heard from members of NIISA about how her support for Impact Aid makes a positive difference in the lives of students, teachers, and schools in tribal communities like the Window Rock Unified School District.

The National Indian Impacted Schools Association is an incorporated non-profit established in 1983. NIISA represents and advocates on behalf of nearly 600 Indian land school districts serving over a million students.
