Hairy crabs harvested on Yangcheng Lake

The 2023 China Suzhou Yangcheng Lake Hairy Crab Harvest Festival kicked off at the Shajiabang Scenic Area in Changshu City. The long-awaited Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs are finally about to be available on the market. The total production of hairy crabs in the Yangcheng Lake is expected to reach 11,000 tons this year. At the opening ceremony, the 2023 crab tag bearing geographical indication and website address for authenticity check was released to prevent cheating.

The breeding area for hairy crabs which is under protection in the Yangcheng Lake is 16,000 mu (about 1,067 hectares), involving more than 2,200 farmers. And there are a number of high-quality breeding ponds with a total area of more than 70,000 mu (about 4,667 hectares), involving more than 4,000 farmers. This year's output is expected to increase by 1,600 tons over the previous year.
