NET.mede records 154 thousand Internet speed tests in the 4th quarter of 2023

In Q4, NET.mede carried out around 154 thousand Internet access speed tests (an average of 1,671 tests per day), 2% more than in the previous quarter and 12% less than in the same quarter last year.

Around 65% of the tests were carried out on residential fixed accesses and 24% on mobile accesses. The increase in the number of tests compared to the previous quarter (+2%) was mainly due to an increase in the number of tests carried out on residential fixed accesses (+5.2 thousand or +5%) and on non-residential accesses (+1.1 thousand or +11%).

For residential fixed access tests, the highest usage was between 4pm and 10pm. For mobile accesses, the times with the highest number of tests were in the morning (10-12am) and in the afternoon (2-6pm).

In Q4, only four municipalities did not record tests on fixed residential accesses and most municipalities (283 out of 308) recorded tests on mobile accesses.

The Lisbon Metropolitan Area (Lisbon M.A.), in particular the municipality of Lisbon, was the region where the highest number of tests were carried out on residential fixed and mobile accesses, followed by the North region for residential fixed accesses and the Centre region for mobile accesses.

Half of (median) speed tests carried out on NET.mede https://netmede.pt/during 4Q2023 found:

  • Download speeds - 157 Mbps or more in fixed residential accesses and 18 Mbps or more in mobile accesses;
  • Upload speeds - 94 Mbps or more in fixed residential accesses and 10 Mbps or more in mobile accesses
  • Latency - 13 milliseconds (ms) or less in fixed residential accesses and 35 ms or less in mobile accesses.

The median results for mobile access would be better if only the tests of access with direct connection to the mobile network carried out on the app were taken into account (46 Mbps download speed, 14 Mbps upload speed and 29 ms latency) and even better if only the tests carried out on the app were taken into account, specifically on the 5G mobile network (137 Mbps download speed, 26 Mbps upload speed and 26 ms latency).

Compared to the same quarter last year, there was an improvement in the median results for residential fixed lines, with increases in download speeds (+30%) and upload speeds (+15%). The exception was the median latency, which remained the same as last year. For mobile access, the median results analysed improved compared to the previous year, with increases in download speeds (+18%) and upload speeds (+35%) and a decrease in latency (-3%).

In the case of fixed accesses, this trend may reflect, among other things, users subscribing to higher speed offers.
