New research on “Social Media and Journalism in Montenegro” published as part of the UNESCO project “Building Trust in Media in South East Europe and Turkey”

How do journalists in Montenegro use social media today? What challenges do they face online? Is media content distribution facilitated by social media platforms or rather the contrary?

Within the UNESCO project, "Building Trust in Media in South East Europe and Turkey - Phase 2," funded by the European Union, the Council for Media Self-regulation in Montenegro led a research to address these questions and better understand what unites media to social media but also what new challenges social media have created for journalists.

The research, entitled "Social Media and Journalism in Montenegro," was conducted by a team comprised of AnetaSpaić and RankoVujović from the Media Council for Self-Regulation, PaulaPetričević, ombudsperson of the daily newspaper Vijesti and weekly Monitor, and IlijaJovićević, ombudsperson of the daily newspaper Dan. The results of the research were presented to the country's media community at a press conference held on 9 September 2022.

The research team surveyed 32 representatives of the media profession and, in addition, organized in-focus interviews with 20 selected media actors.

The research showed that journalists in Montenegro use social media in their work - Facebook (83%), Twitter (50%), and Instagram (37%) both to disseminate information and as a source of information, as well as privately.
