Water Advisory Issued for Canal Beach at Canal Waterfront Park

Monday, June 5, 2023.

Port Alberni, BC - The City of Port Alberni would like to inform residents and visitors of a water advisory issued for Canal Beach.

Vancouver Island Health Authority [VIHA] has detected elevated levels of bacteria in the water at Canal Beach, prompting the issuance of this advisory as a precautionary measure.

The City collects water samples regularly from the site for testing, and it is the most recent sample, collected from Canal Beach on May 30, 2023, exceeds the single sample maximum concentration for enterococci according to the Guidelines for Canadian Recreational Water.

The elevated bacteria levels may pose potential health risks to individuals who come into contact with the water. Samples will continue to be submitted by the City for testing. While the advisory is in effect, it is strongly advised that individuals refrain from swimming, wading, or engaging in any water activities at Canal Beach. We also encourage pet owners to keep their animals out of the water at this time.

The City of Port Alberni would like to thank the community for their understanding and cooperation during this time. We are committed to ensuring the health and well-being of everyone in the City. The City will advise residents once the advisory has been lifted.
