Hospital da Luz Coimbra has new magnetic resonance equipment

The 3 Tesla MRI allows more precise exams and will be primarily used in brain and musculoskeletal diseases.

Hospital da Luz Coimbra reinforced its Imaging Service with a third magnetic resonance equipment (MRI). Even more advanced and with higher resolution, this 3 Tesla equipment is especially suited for exams of the brain functioning and of the musculoskeletal system (namely muscles, nerves, joints, cartilages and spinal discs).

"Notwithstanding the relatively recent investments already made in imagiology, we have decided to acquire this equipment so as to accomplish the differentiated quality service we are committed to offer our clients", explains Filipe Caseiro Alves, the clinical director of the hospital. This effort of investment confirms, on the other hand, "the acknowledgement of the pivotal role of medical imaging in the activities of group Luz Saúde", he adds.

Comfortable for the client (it is silent and has a larger arc, reducing the feeling of claustrophobia), the 3.0 Tesla technology allows more precise and safe exams, fundamental for a better diagnosis. Being a cutting-edge equipment, it allows higher efficacy in particular exams, such as:

  • MRI of the cervical spine, MRI of the lumbosacral spine and MRI of the whole body (for oncologic studies);
  • Prostate multiparametric MRI (for a more precise detection of prostatic cancer in early stage);
  • Functional study of the brain, liver, pancreas and biliary tract;
  • Advanced evaluation in cases of gynaecologic inflammatory disease (namely endometriosis), pathology of the musculoskeletal system and articular cartilage, among other.

Besides the added value in terms of healthcare, this new equipment will boost the clinical research work already being developed by the hospital. "In the near future, we expect to obtain results for clinical research with this cerebral-functional component that the 3 Tesla offers, and also to foster competent studies in musculoskeletal diseases, since it enables the detection of subtler alterations", further explains Filipe Caseiro Alves.
