Meeks, McCaul Issue Statement on Coup in Mali

Washington, DC - Today, Representatives Gregory W. Meeks and Michael McCaul, Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement regarding the second coup to occur in Mali in less than one year:

'We are shocked and dismayed by the second military-led coup in Mali in less than one year, and we strongly condemn the role of the military junta in disrupting the civilian-led transition and progress made towards national elections in 2022. We commend ECOWAS for suspending the Malian government from the regional body in the wake of the unlawful detention and forced resignation of Mali's civilian interim president and prime minister.'

'We support the State Department's decision to immediately suspend all assistance to the Malian military and assess our future engagement. We urge the administration to take swift action, including targeted sanctions, to hold all members of the military junta and others accountable for further threatening the peace and stability of Mali. We also urge the administration to work with international partners, including the UN, ECOWAS, the AU, and the EU, to restore a constitutional transition of power. The United States will continue to stand with the Malian people who have long suffered from decades of political instability, terrorism, and violence.'
