Statement from Representative Adriano Espaillat Ahead of Speaker Johnson’s Visit to Columbia University

NEW YORK, NY - Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued the following statement in response to House Speaker Johnson's planned visit to Columbia University furthering political divide and tension.

"Antisemitism feeds on division. The impact of antisemitic rhetoric and hate speech targeting Jewish students at Columbia and other campuses around our nation encroach upon religious tolerance and freedom and is simply unacceptable," said Rep. Espaillat. "It is our duty as public servants at all levels of government, including in New York City, to work collaboratively to use the legislative and budgetary processes within our parameters to eradicate antisemitism whenever possible.

"I am deeply concerned by what is ongoing at Columbia University in my district as outside individuals who are unaffiliated with the University have agitated the situation. This is unacceptable, and appropriate action must be taken to hold them accountable. There has undoubtedly been a rise in hate rhetoric in our nation, and it is profoundly disturbing and must never be tolerated. Unfortunately, instead of working to advance real solutions like my bill, Combating Hate Across Campus Act (H.R. 7998) and the Countering Antisemitism Act (H.R.7921), which I cosponsored, House Speaker Johnson is unduly using this moment to further his political interests. I remain steadfast in my commitment to supporting Jewish students and their families to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

"I urge the Speaker to bring forward significant legislation to the floor for consideration. These are the kinds of bills that must be passed to ensure federal funding and support to combat antisemitism across the country. I remain solvent in my commitment to supporting Jewish students and their families in my district and communities around the nation."
