Groundbreaking Ceremony to be held for Early Head Start/Head Start Facility

The City of Douglas, Coffee County Commission, Coffee County Board of Education, Douglas-Coffee County Economic Development Authority, and action pact will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion project to the Head Start/Early Head Start facility. The ceremony will occur on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 10 a.m. The location of the ceremony will be at 511 Pine Street.

The City of Douglas was granted $1,000,000 by the Department of Community Affairs Community Development Block Grant for the joint entity project. The grant will be used to expand the existing Early Head Start and Head Start facility by providing 4 classrooms, a new kitchen, and a new cafeteria. The project is expected to benefit 125 people, out of which 19% are low to moderate-income persons. Construction work began in October 2023 with the demolition of the old facility and is currently being led by Lewis Construction. The project is expected to be completed by Fall 2024, costing $1,512,800, including $512,800 in match and leverage.
