Podcast series with ABA women in national security law honor 19th Amendment centennial

WASHINGTON, Oct. 16, 2020 - The ABA Standing Committee on Law and National Security conducted interviews with 19 prominent women lawyers for its podcast National Security Today, in tribute to the centennial of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote.

Interviews featuring ABA President Patricia Lee Refo and immediate past ABA president Judy Perry Martinez bookend the series, which connects the significance of the 19th Amendment to the accomplishments of women in the field of national security law. Others interviewed include Julie Hugyen, former senior Air Force judge; Suzanne Spaulding, former Department of Homeland Security Undersecretary and member of the Cyberspace Solarium Commission; and Bonnie Jenkins, founder of Women of Color Advancing Peace and Security Ambassador.

The podcasts are part of the ABA's yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. Other initiatives include the digital 'Nineteenth Amendment Centennial Cookbook: 100 Recipes for 100 Years,' featuring recipes from five Supreme Court justices and other legal luminaries; a traveling exhibit called '100 Years After the 19th Amendment: Their Legacy, and Our Future' curated by the Library of Congress; digital tool kits to help support public and student programming; free streaming videos that can be used for commemoration events and programs; links to other organizations planning commemoration activities; state anniversary dates; interesting facts about the 19th Amendment and the battle for full suffrage; and a gallery of 19th Amendment images and photos.
