Barrasso Statement on Senate Vote to Raise the Debt Ceiling

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today issued the following statement after voting against legislation that would raise the debt ceiling without meaningful spending reforms:

"Since January, I have been clear that any legislation to raise the debt ceiling must make substantive changes to how this country spends money in the future. This bill falls short.

"This legislation is an important first step away from the Democrats' reckless spending agenda. It cuts funding for new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agents, claws back billions in unspent COVID funds, and adds work requirements for welfare programs.

"It does not do enough to match the seriousness of the moment and the dangerous debt crisis our country is facing.

"This is a missed opportunity to get government growth under control and put our nation on a sustainable fiscal path. Much more needs to be done if we're serious about tackling the debt and beating back inflation."
