Huawei invited UNESCO for the upgraded training center opening ceremony

Huawei invited UNESCO for the opening ceremony of its upgraded and expanded Training Center in Nairobi on 9 June 2021. Ms. Ann Therese Ndong-Jatta, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa; Mr. Jerome Ochieng, Principal Secretary (PS) from the Ministry of Information, Communications And Telecommunication (ICT), Kenya, representing the Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Joseph Mucheru; Mr. Simon Nabukwesi, PS from Ministry of Education, Kenya; Mr. David Mburu, representing Ms. Victoria Wambui Ngumi, the Vice Chancellor of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT); Mr. Duan Xuepeng, Vice president of Huawei Southern Africa region, were among the guests presented at the ceremony.

The opening ceremony started with tree planting, followed by speeches given by representatives from government and educational institutions, and ended with ribbon cutting and a tour of Huawei training center.

Mr. Duan Xuepeng, opened the ceremony by case showing Huawei contribution to boosting digital literacy in African countries, and committed to keeping working with Kenya Government and educational institutions to unleash Kenya's talent to bring the country into the digital age.

Mr. David Mburu from JKUAT thanked Huawei for its continued support by offering courses, internships and jobs to students from JKUAT, and for bridging the gap between what is learnt at universities and what is required in the job market.

Giving the keynote speech at the ceremony, Ms. Ann Therese Ndong-Jatta noted that Information and Communication Technologies form the backbone of the digital revolution and help accelerate progress towards every single one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals to make cities and communities sustainable. She also highlighted the importance of ICT in agriculture, communication, education and especially in helping girls and women to leave no one behind in harnessing the potential of the digital economy.

Mr. Simon Nabukwesi from the State Department for University Education and Research congratulated Huawei on its achievements in ICT education, and stressed that talent remains the key resource in industry while there is a need to invest in capacity building and development of the ICT sector.

Mr. Jerome Ochieng, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of ICT, commended Huawei on its support to the growth of Kenya's talent ecosystem to fly the Kenyan flag high in the region. He also emphasized the continued partnership with Huawei to leverage technologies as catalyzing powers of the Big Four Agenda (Kenya), such as precision agriculture for food security, smart and technologically ready homes for affordable housing, connected hospitals for universal healthcare.

Huawei officially launched the Eastern Africa Training Center in 2008, from which point the center has trained over 7,200 people from operators, subcontractors, government officials, industry partners and students from across the region. In year 2020, Huawei upgraded and expanded the Training Center with a wide array of the latest innovative equipment in mobile networks, fiber networks, energy solutions and other integrated telecommunications infrastructure. The upgraded training center intends to offer scenario-based digital skills training to over 10,000 partners, carrier customers, enterprise customers, and youth in the next 3 years. The Training Center is aim to provide a steady of talents for Kenya's ICT industry, continually help Kenya's ICT industry development at a high speed.
