Man arrested in connection with 2023 fatal hit and run collision that occurred on Mission Boulevard/Orchard Avenue

HAYWARD, Calif., On 04-07-2024, 36-year-old Hayward resident, Angelo Tollardowas arrested and charged for the fatal hit and run that occurred September 6, 2023,at approximately 5:36 p.m.near Mission Blvd and Orchard Ave.

On the night of the incident,officers responded to the report of a hit and run collision involving a vehicle and bicyclist at the listed intersection.

Officers arrived on scene and found the bicyclist, unconscious and suffering from injuries related to the collision. The bicyclist,later identified as 55-year-old Hayward resident, Christopher Pena,was transported to a local medical facility where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the involved vehicle fled the sceneat a high rate of speed prior to officers' arrival. Itwas believed the driver was the sole occupant inside the car at the time of the collision.


Witnesses described the vehicle as a gray, early to mid 2000's model Mercedes E350, with silver colored five spoke rims. The vehicle was believed to havemajor front-end passenger side damage as a result ofthe collision.

On 09-14-2023, the vehicle believed to be involved in the collision was recovered after it had been altered, set on fire, and abandoned. It was also determinedthat the recovered vehicle had previously been reported as stolen.


As the investigation continued,Traffic Officers identified Tollardoas the man they believed to be responsibleforthe fatal hit and run of Pena.

Acriminal complaint warrant was issued by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office for Tollardoand,on 04-07-2024, Tollardowas taken into custody,in Hayward,by patrol officers.

Angelo Tollardo has been charged with vehicular manslaughterand felony hit and run.

Chief Matthews issued a statement on the matter saying, "I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to our dedicated Traffic Bureau for their hard work, commitmentand diligentefforts in identifying, locating, and apprehending the manbelieved to be responsible forthis tragic incident. Their perseverance has been instrumental in bringing justice for Mr. Pena and for his family.

To the Pena family, please accept my sincerest condolences. While this arrest cannot erase the pain you are experiencing, our hopeis thatit may serve as a small step toward healing. May you find some measure of comfort knowing our thoughts are with you as you continue to navigate your grief."
