Public Works' Week in Review for May 2, 2024

The Public Works Department is made up of various sub-departments including Fleet, Line Repair, Streets/Stormwater and Traffic, Wastewater, and Water. Each week, over 100 employees are responsible for the maintenance, monitoring, and improvement of existing and new infrastructure across League City which includes everything from roadways and traffic lights to storm drains, sewers, and water production.

Below are some tips and projects they are working on:

Monthly Dead-End Watermain Flushing

League City has 565 dead-end water mains throughout the distribution system, that are required to be flushed monthly to stay in compliance with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Hydrant flushing is an important part of a routine maintenance program, which is necessary to maintain the integrity of the water system and ensure high quality water is delivered to our customers.

Here are some benefits of routine maintenance flushing:

To maintain water quality - The disinfectant, chloramine, becomes less effective as water collects and becomes older. This process is exacerbated in warmer months as rising temperatures can accelerate the degradation of disinfection in the water. During routine checks of the City's distribution system various test are taken to ensure water quality. If any of these tests indicate unacceptable water quality, hydrant flushing becomes an effective tool to improve water quality in the area of concern. Flushing simply displaces the lesser quality water with improved in-pipe water conditions.

To clean water mains - Over time, small particles can build up inside the water distribution pipes and can have an impact on water quality. If this happens, we use flushing to move water at high velocity through distribution piping to remove any sediment. The rapid flow of water scours the insides of the pipes, thus removing the sediment build up.

Updated Signal Timing on League City Parkway

With the recent opening of SH 146 through Kemah there has been a large increase in drivers traveling on roadways within League City. The corridor that has seen the largest increase is League City Pkwy. The reason for this increase is not only due to the opening of the new lanes on SH 146 but also due to recently implemented closures or construction South of League City on SH 146 and on I-45. This has caused drivers to choose League City Pkwy as the preferred route. With this increase of traffic coming from both directions on League City Pkwy, Traffic staff is working to increase green light timing along League City Pkwy to get more vehicles through the City and to their destination. These signal timing updates are planned to be in place within the next two weeks. After that time staff will monitor the timing improvements to ensure the updated signal timings are properly balanced to help keep travel delays down as much as possible. Any questions or concerns notify the Traffic Dept at [email protected] or Public Works Front Desk at 281-554-1086.

Utility Line Repair Department's Replacement Dump Truck

The City of League City Fleet Department received a new 2025 Kenworth T480 dump truck. This dump truck replaces a 22-year-old unit in service since 2003. This new fleet equipment will allow Line Repair to transport various materials to and from all job sites.

What is Barklice?:

  • Tiny, soft-bodied insects that are about 1/8 inch in length
  • When disturbed, they move together as a large group
  • Form webs over tree trunks and limbs
  • Beneficial: Function as "cleaning crew" for trees-work to decompose fungi, debris, dead bark, etc. on tree trunks. They often return to the same trees the following season.
