BMI Remembers Legendary Composer Richard Sherman

BMI was deeply saddened to learn of the death of renowned composer Richard Sherman, who passed away on Saturday, May 25, at age 95.

Richard Sherman, along with his late brother Robert, wrote the timeless music and lyrics for some of the most beloved family films ever made. During their time as Disney Studio writers and beyond, the pair crafted indelible melodies that resonated with millions of global fans. The Sherman Brothers notably created the enchanting songs featured in Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Winnie the Pooh, and Charlotte's Web, among others. Some of their many classics include "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," and "Chim Chim Cher-ee." Their ubiquitous song, "It's a Small World," was commissioned to accompany Disney's boat ride attraction at the 1964 New York World's Fair, has since been translated into countless languages and has become an international anthem for world peace.

A two-time Academy Award winner, multiple GRAMMY Award recipient, and BMI Richard Kirk Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, Richard Sherman's importance in the world of film music is unmatched.
