Merced Welcomes a Seasoned Legal Expert as the New City Attorney
Merced, Calif - [November 20, 2023] - The City of Merced is delighted to announce the appointment of its new City Attorney, Craig J. Cornwell, a distinguished legal professional with over 23 years of experience in providing sound consultative advice to council bodies and city management. Cornwell is a well-rounded attorney with expertise in various areas, including contract negotiation, law enforcement oversight, civil litigation, criminal prosecution, strategic planning, budget development, and drafting legislation.
The City of Merced conducted an extensive search to find a candidate who possesses the experience, leadership, and vision required for this crucial role. Craig Cornwell was a standout candidate with an impressive career in public service.
"As City Attorney, Cornwell will play a pivotal role in shaping the legal landscape of Merced, ensuring the city's adherence to the law and advocating for the best interests of its residents," stated City of Merced Mayor Matthew Serratto. "Craig is dedicated to maintaining the safety, integrity, and prosperity of the city, and his vast legal knowledge and expertise will be invaluable in achieving these goals."
Cornwell has a proven track record of providing guidance to municipalities and serving as a valuable legal advisor. His experience includes creating ordinances, resolutions, and legal opinions and providing legal advice and guidance to the City Council, boards, commissions, members of city management, and department heads, directing outside counsel activities and serving as risk manager in relation to outsourced legal work.

Mr. Cornwell will assume his responsibilities starting on December 5, 2023.
