7 Latin American countries sign agreement for the creation of a Migration Alert Network in the region

Lima, the capital of Peru, hosted a three-day meeting which brought together representatives from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.

The meeting, organised by the National Superintendence of Migration of Peru and the FIIAPP, Spanish cooperation, through the European programme EUROFRONT, has allowed them to discuss and share their needs and concerns.

This debate has resulted in seven countries: Argentina, Br[Link]azil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay signing this agreement in which they commit to work together in the implementation of this Migration Alerts Network.

"There are good experiences of specific information exchange, such as those of INTERPOL and the Pacific Alliance. However, we need to strengthen their scope at the level of migration and security authorities to tackle transnational crime and also to facilitate the transit of thousands of people who cross our borders," he said.

This network will allow the countries involved to exchange alerts on persons in transit who have a legal warning that may affect security. This will help to prevent cross-border crime.

José Antonio Cambronero, Director of EUROFRONT, has emphasised the need to organise in various ways to tackle organised crime, including the secure and coordinated exchange of information between international migration control authorities.

"The main objective of the Migration Alert Network is to strengthen regional and international coordination and cooperation of agencies in charge of managing border security and migration flows".

During the meeting, the migration authorities expressed various proposals to move towards the creation of an information exchange mechanism, guaranteeing human rights and the protection of people's data, as proposed by Migration and the European EUROFRONT programme.

The creation of the Migration Alert Network is designed to optimise migration control processes through an efficient exchange of information, thus contributing to security, reducing waiting times at border crossings and increasing the capacity to detect illegal cross-border activities.
