Detectives Arrest Convicted Felon With Outstanding Warrants During Tuesday Night Traffic Stop

Violent Crimes detectives arrested a convicted felon with outstanding warrants Tuesday night during a traffic stop on I-440 East after he was found speeding near the Nolensville Pike exit. Montonio Shelton, 34, told the detective he was late for work when he was pulled over just after 10:30 p.m.

Shelton told the detective he was on probation and had violated it. When the detective returned to his police car to run his license, Shelton continued to peer out of his window and eventually exited his Dodge Durango.

As Shelton approached the patrol car, the detective learned he had two outstanding warrants for parole violation and failure to appear. Shelton was told to put his hands behind his back when he began resisting.

Shelton was taken into custody after a brief struggle with assistance from nearby officers who responded to the scene. A Smith & Wesson handgun loaded with an extended magazine was located inside the Durango. Shelton also had another magazine inside a vest he was wearing.

Shelton has been convicted of especially aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery, prohibiting him from possessing a firearm.

Shelton was charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and misdemeanor evading arrest. He was also served with the two outstanding warrants.
