Staying sun smart in the City

Published 18 April 2024

Staying sun smart has been that much easier with the recent installation of a UV Index Sensor at Koombana Bay.

The sensor alerts beachgoers of the current UV index which can range from low (0-2) to extreme (11+).

It is recommended to use a combination of the five sun protection measures - slip, slop, slap, seek and hide - when the UV level is above three.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Each year there are close to one million treatments for skin cancer and more than 2,000 deaths.

The good news is that skin cancer is largely preventable by minimising exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

While we are in the middle of autumn and approaching winter - the weather is still giving summer temperatures with the UV index remaining above three for the most part.
