“We plan to achieve the net zero emission target by 2053”

Addressing the World Climate Action Summit, President Erdoğan said: "Although our historical responsibility for the greenhouse gas emission is below 1 per cent, we take very significant steps by using our own means. We plan to achieve the net zero emission target by 2053."

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a speech at the World Climate Action Summit held as part of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai.

Stating that the world is now faced with the bitter repercussions of the massacres in Gaza following the coronavirus pandemic and the Ukraine-Russia war, President Erdoğan said that Türkiye favors peace in all these crises, and works for a resolution on the basis of justice and equity.

"WE HAVE INCREASED THE SHARE OF THE RENEWABLE ENERGY RESOURCES IN THE TOTAL INSTALLED CAPACITY TO 55 PER CENT"

Noting that they address the issue of climate change from this perspective as well, President Erdoğan said: "Although our historical responsibility for the greenhouse gas emission is below 1 per cent, we take very significant steps by using our own means. We plan to achieve the net zero emission target by 2053. We have doubled our emission reduction target for 2030. To this end, we expect a carbon dioxide emission reduction of 66.6 million tons by the end of this year."

Underscoring that they have increased the share of the renewable energy resources in the total installed capacity to 55 per cent, President Erdoğan added: "This rate makes us rank 5th in Europe and 12th in the world. We rank first in Europe and fourth in the world in geothermal installed capacity. In hydroelectric plant installed capacity, we rank second in Europe and 9th in the world. We have begun to implement our Hydrogen Technologies Strategy. Also, we have completed our decarburization roadmaps for steel, aluminum, cement and fertilizer sectors within the context of net zero emission target. We plan to increase the share of renewable energy to 69 per cent by 2053."
