Chicken Situation Report, January to March 2023

In January to March 2023, chicken production was estimated at 470.21 thousand metric tons, liveweight, indicating an annual growth of 3.3 percent from the 455.04 thousand metric tons, liveweight output in the same period of 2022. (Figure 1)

During the period, Central Luzon was the top producer of chicken with 162.44 thousand metric tons, liveweight or 34.5 percent share to the total chicken production. Completing the top five regions with the highest volume of chicken production at liveweight in the first quarter of 2023 were the following:

a. CALABARZON, 81.06 thousand metric tons;
b. Northern Mindanao, 44.22 thousand metric tons;
c. Western Visayas, 31.57 thousand metric tons; and
d. Ilocos Region, 25.53 thousand metric tons.

These regions accounted for 73.3 percent share to the country's total chicken production during the quarter.

Relative to their outputs in the same quarter of 2022, 13 regions reported increments in production during the quarter. In terms of level, Davao Region recorded the highest growth of 7.84 thousand metric tons, from 12.80 thousand metric tons in the first quarter of 2022 to 20.64 thousand metric tons in the same quarter of 2023.

As of 31 March 2023, the total chicken inventory reached 195.48 million birds. This was 3.0 percent higher than the previous year's same period count of 189.71 million birds. Population of native/improved chicken and broiler chicken grew by 5.6 percent and 2.1 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, layer chicken stocks reported a decline of -0.2 percent.

Of the total chicken inventory, native/improved chicken accounted for 43.4 percent, followed by broiler chicken with 33.5 percent share, and layer chicken with 23.1 percent share. (Figure 3)

The highest chicken inventory was noted in Central Luzon with 33.75 million birds. This was followed by CALABARZON with 28.62 million birds and Northern Mindanao with 21.26 million birds. These regions accounted for 42.8 percent share to the country's total chicken inventory during the period.

The highest inventory of native/improved chicken was recorded in Western Visayas with 13.42 million birds. Central Luzon reported the highest inventory of broiler chicken with 18.03 million birds, while CALABARZON had the highest layer chicken stocks with 16.89 million birds.

The average farmgate price of broiler chicken at PhP 116.14 per kilogram, liveweight during the quarter increased by 9.9 percent from the previous year's same period average farmgate price of PhP 105.70 per kilogram, liveweight. (Figure 5)

The highest average farmgate price for this quarter was quoted in January at PhP 116.48 per kilogram, liveweight, while the lowest average farmgate price was in February at PhP 115.81 per kilogram, liveweight.
