Supporting affordable college

Individuals in the Marianas with student loan debt have benefited from the repayment pause and forgiveness policies of President Biden-policies that Republican Attorneys General are challenging all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Republicans in Congress piled on with a hearing Wednesday to criticize those policies; but I spoke in favor, sharing the experience of a constituent from the Marianas whose life is a little easier because of President Biden. You can hear her message to me in the video clip, linked above. As a member of the Higher Education and Workforce Development Subcommittee I will continue to support federal policies that make higher education an affordable reality for all Americans.

In Memoriam: Rep. Don Young

Rep. Young and I served together on the Natural Resources Committee, where he supported my efforts to establish a visitor center for the Marianas Marine National Monument, to have the Palau Compact of Free Association renewed, and for the CNMI-only Permanent Resident status for those overlooked in the immigrant transition, which was enacted in USPL 116-24.

Trump insular priorities questioned

Why does the Trump administration want to cut the Coral Reef Initiative, Technical and Maintenance Assistance, and Brown Tree Snake Control? Those were some of my questions to Interior Assistant Secretary Doug Domenech, when the Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs Subcommittee held its oversight hearing on the FY2019 budget on Tuesday.

Justice Assistance Grant legislation means equal treatment for NMI

In the 111th Congress, my bill providing state-level fundingfor the Northern Mariana Islands under the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant program passed the House by a simple voice vote. But the Senate took no action. This week I reintroduced the bill, which remains important to everyone in law enforcement and public safety in the Northern Marianas.
