ADA Awards: Do you know an exceptional dentist?

It is once again time to gather nominations to recognise the brightest stars amongst our profession. After all, the real heroes, the ones who make an exemplary contribution to their chosen field, are usually not the type of people to sing their own praises.

This applies to dentistry as much as any other profession.

That's why the ADA is asking you to nominate someone you know who has made or is making a significant national contribution to furthering dentistry and/or the profession in:

i. a particular field of dentistry;
ii. dentistry as a whole; or
iii. the community as a whole.

Do you know someone who:

- has made/is making a significant difference in their community;

- plays a key role in promoting oral health;

- who volunteers their time and energy to working with disadvantaged groups, either in Australia or overseas; or

- plays a pivotal role in the profession?

If so, then the ADA wants to hear from you.

Past winners have demonstrated a long and distinguished service to dentistry; been key contributors to dental research, leading figures in oral health science, community education and dentistry to disadvantaged groups; role models and mentors for all dentists.

In 2021, award winners have included:

- Conjoint Associate Professor Deborah Cockrell AM, recipient of the ADA Distinguished Service Award to recognise her leadership in fields such as education programs, research and outreach;

- Dr Mark Bowman, also awarded the ADA Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding work such as his extensive voluntary consultancies with the government, and his major contributions to the Child Dental Benefits Scheme and the Cleft Palate program;

- Dr David Hallett, receiving the ADA Distinguished Service Award to acknowledge his 30+ years of service to the dental profession on both a state and federal level, offering mentorship and professional guidance with great generosity;

- Dr Angela Pierce, whose own significant contribution to the ADA on both state and federal level, and to the Australian government, also earned her the ADA Distinguished Service Award;

- Dr David Butler, Dr Amanda Phoon Nguyen, Prof. Janet Wallace, and Dr Susan Wise, all of whose exemplary contributions to their profession and the community resulted in their receiving the ADA Valuable Service Award; and

- Dr Linton Nash, recipient of the Outstanding Young Dentist Award for already excelling in voluntary and
philanthropic involvement, council representation, armed forces service and leadership and ambassadorship of the profession.
