On April 26, 2024, a tornado outbreak caused widespread destruction to a large area between Lincoln and western Iowa, as well as areas in central Nebraska, damaging homes, structures, and the landscape. Nebraska Farm Bureau has compiled a list of opportunities for members to help individuals and communities affected by the tornadoes.
House Ag Committee Chairman G.T. Thompson (R-PA) and Senate Ag Committee Chairwomen Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) released their high-level summaries of their versions of a new Farm Bill. While the bills have many similarities, they also have many large differences.

The EPA this week announced they are proposing to cancel all but one use of acephate, which is an organophosphate with the trade name Orthene. Acephate has agricultural uses for cotton and soybeans.

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture continues to monitor for the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus in dairy cattle. Recently, the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service issued a federal order, that took effect on April 29, mandating testing for interstate movement of lactating dairy cattle as well as mandatory reporting of positive cases. HPAI has been detected in lactating dairy cattle in several states. There have been no reported detections of HPAI in Nebraska dairy cattle or other livestock.
