During the summer vacation, museums are attracting a surge of visitors, including students on study trips, to explore and learn. Across the country, popular museums are experiencing a significant increase in tourism, requiring visitors to reserve entry tickets in advance and wait in queues for admission.

Ningbo is no exception to this summer's museum travel trend. Museums and art galleries in the city have launched new exhibitions, offering cultural feasts for visitors. Study trips have become highly sought-after, and the "Wonderful Night at the Museum" program, featuring extended opening hours, enhanced services, and diverse activities, adds a beautiful touch to the city's nightlife.

The exhibitions feature diverse themes, various forms of art, and substantial content, taking visitors on an exploration journey of cultural and scientific knowledge. This experience is especially valuable for families, allowing parents and children to engage in themed exhibitions and social education activities that enrich the cultural experiences of teenage students.

Immerse in a visual feast at exhibitions

On July 6th, the Ningbo Museum unveiled the "Civilization of the Great Rivers" exhibition, where cultural relics from four ancient civilizations were brought together. Ancient Egyptian cat mummies, Mesopotamian cuneiform clay tablets, ancient Indian clay pots, and painted potteries from China's Yellow River Basin continue to shine through time and space.

Simultaneously, the Ningbo Museum is hosting three exhibitions: "Civilization of the Great Rivers," "Whale's World" in the east and west halls on the first floor, and "Ningbo from the South Song Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty" in the temporary hall on the third floor. These exhibitions have garnered popularity among students, with long queues forming for on-site reservations and verification at the museum entrance. Waves of citizens and visitors are checking in to explore the history of the four ancient civilizations, experience the immersive ocean science displays on whales and dolphins, and delve into the power source behind Ningbo's urban development during the Yuan Dynasty. Last weekend, over 25,000 people visited the museum, reaching its maximum capacity, leading to a "Capacity Warning" from the museum.

The "Civilization of the Great Rivers" and "Whale's World" are national blockbuster exhibitions brought to the museum through joint efforts. The former is a collaboration between the Ningbo Museum, Art Exhibitions China, four Italian museums, and thirteen domestic museum institutions. The latter is a cooperative project between the Ningbo Museum and the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.

Zhang Liang, director of the Ningbo Museum, expressed that the mingling of cultural relics from the four ancient civilizations reflects the shared characteristics of river basin civilizations and objectively demonstrates the continuity, innovativeness, unity, inclusiveness, and peace of Chinese civilization across time and space. The exhibits from the Liangzhu civilization and Erlitou culture affirm the continuity of the five-millennium Chinese civilization, highlighting its distinctive features of "diversity, inclusiveness, and continuity."

Since July 1st, the "Exhibition of Masterpieces of Chinese Paintings" has captivated a constant stream of visitors at the Ningbo Museum of Art. The comprehensive hall showcases over 1,600 extraordinary Chinese painting samples from past dynasties, ranging from the pre-Qin Dynasty to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Notably, an enlarged version of "A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains," stretching 20 meters long, provides visitors with an immersive appreciation of this artistic masterpiece.

Numerous museums provide educational opportunities for students

The China Port Museum has launched the seventh season of the "Enlightenment" Chinese Culture Liberal Study Camp titled "Getting the Rice." This study camp combines the history of rice culture in Zhejiang, spanning tens of thousands of years, with its splendid cultural heritage. During the five-day study trip, students will visit Eight Diagram Field in Hangzhou, Liangzhu Site, Cicheng Rice Cake Museum, Wang Shengda Museum, and China Port Museum to explore the history of human rice culture and understand the entire process of rice cultivation, from the field to the dining table.

As the recent high temperatures persist, museums have become popular destinations for primary and secondary school students to "escape the heat while gaining knowledge."

Ningbo Museum and Ningbo Bang Museum have both designed programs specifically for cultural relics and museum studies. Following the success of the "Whale's Strange World" special exhibition, they are now presenting the "Whale's Summer Dream" immersive study summer camp. This immersive play, the first of its kind at the Ningbo Museum, combines the expertise of museum teachers and youth drama education specialists to integrate knowledge about whales and dolphins with cultural and artistic content. Through open-ended exhibition activities, students can have a sensory experience of drama. The summer camp, which is almost fully booked, will be held from July 18th to 23rd.

Next, the Ningbo Museum will launch the "My New Life of 'Intangible Cultural Heritage' Study Camp," featuring five aspects: cultural relic appreciation, pattern design, technique learning, workshop visits, and artwork creation. The first session of the "Intangible Cultural Heritage" study camp, focusing on gold and silver embroidery, will begin on July 21st. It aims to guide children in inheriting the spirit of craftsmanship and experiencing the charm of local intangible cultural heritage.

Meanwhile, inspired by the "Tiny Insects, Vast World - Insect Knowledge Exhibition," the Ningbo Bang Museum will conduct a summer insect study camp in two batches. Additionally, a public welfare activity called "Endless Fun for Chess - Summer Go Classroom" will provide a platform for teenagers to play chess in July.

The Tianyige Museum's "Little Scholars in Tianyige" summer camp is already fully booked. On July 10th, participants of the first phase of the camp gathered at the museum for a five-day literary study activity. They experienced woodblock printing and paper dyeing techniques, created their own "family genealogy," made models of ancient garden architecture, appreciated stone inscriptions, and recited the Analects of Confucius. They spent a "cool summer" immersed in the fragrant atmosphere of books.

Luocheng, located in Haishu District, is a place in Ningbo with profound historical accumulation, a rich cultural atmosphere, and abundant cultural resources. As the core of Ningbo's museum cluster, Luocheng provides a natural environment for study. This weekend, a large-scale free study activity called "Touring Haishu, Exploring Culture and Museums" will be launched. Yu Lan, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television, and Sports of Haishu District, mentioned that this activity will be conducted in groups. The participating museums include Tianyige Museum, Wangjingmen City Wall Ruins Museum, Ningbo Education Museum, Qianye Assembly Hall, Tu Youyou Former Residence Exhibition Hall, Haishu Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, Sun Chuanzhe Art Museum, and Lu Xuzhang Memorial Hall.

Yu said, "By combining study trips with the construction of the urban cultural and museum district, we aim to welcome more children to experience the beauty of the city and culture while exploring the Haishu urban cultural and museum district."

Museums collaborate to offer high-quality nighttime experiences

With the arrival of high temperatures, people's desire for leisure and entertainment at night has significantly increased. Many museums have reopened their doors for nighttime activities, providing an opportunity for more audiences to enjoy historical anecdotes in the cool summer breeze.

The first round of "Exploring Culture and History in Haishu" begins with night tours on July 15th and 16th. Four locations have been selected for nighttime openings: the Wangjing Gate City Wall Ruins Museum, Ningbo Education Museum, Qianye Guild Hall, and Tu Youyou's Former Residence Exhibition Hall.

Ningbo Museum kicked off the "Marvelous Night at the Museum" event on May 18th, International Museum Day this year. Following its success, the museum organized the "Wonderful Night of Whales" themed activity on July 6th, just before the opening of "Whale's World" on July 30th and 31st. Additionally, the museum will host an overnight stay event in the main hall during those dates.

On July 1st, Ningbo Ocean World introduced its first independent overnight camping activity, "Marvelous Night at the Oceanarium." Children participated in various activities, including visiting the Mermaid Museum, night tours with the Underwater Little Squad, and listening to nighttime tales of ocean spirits. Through these sensory experiences, they immersed themselves in the wonders and mysteries of the ocean.

"One of the participating children excitedly shared, 'We stayed in the Mermaid Show Hall this time, and the entire wall was in a dreamy shade of blue, very enchanting. The caretakers also came here to feed the mermaids, which was especially fun.'"

The cultural and educational community of Ningbo has recently launched a variety of distinctive activities, thanks to its museum cluster advantage, fueling continued enthusiasm for culture and education. The 2023 Haishu Urban Cultural and Educational District Summer Activities have splendidly kicked off, including five series of events such as "Exploring Culture and History in Haishu" throughout the entire summer vacation. Following this series, a lineup of activities will be launched, including the Dazzling Short Video (Photography) Contest, the People's Cultural and Educational Lecturer Competition, the Sai Bao Activity, and the "Golden Idea" Innovation Experience Project, all aimed at creating the Haishu Urban Cultural and Educational District.

Yu Lan, speaking about these activities, said, "Through the development of online and offline series of events, we aim to integrate cultural and educational activities into people's daily lives, enhance the significance of key events, promote innovation in focused activities, attract more people to come to Haishu, explore culture and history, capture cultural moments through photography, deliver cultural lectures, appreciate cultural exhibitions, and savor cultural experiences."
