La Mare de Carteret celebrating its 50th anniversary

Monday 22 April 2024

La Mare de Carteret schools are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. Both the primary school and high school opened in 1974 and have been educating the children of the island ever since.

There are a number of events taking place this year across both schools to celebrate, but La Mare Primary will be holding a special open day on Friday 10th May and as part of that open day, it will be featuring items from the school's history.

Alison Elliott, Headteacher at La Mare de Carteret Primary School, is asking previous pupils, former members of staff and people that have been part of the school's community over the last 50 years to get in touch if they have items that can be exhibited as part of that display.

Mrs Elliott said:

"On Friday 10th May we will be holding a special 50th Anniversary Open Day. As well as an opportunity to find out more about the life of the school in 2024, one of the things I'm most excited about is our La Mare de Carteret museum exhibition, which we will be putting on in the school hall. We have a number of items key to the school's past to display including diaries, log books and photographs, but we're also asking anyone who may have something worth adding to the exhibition to get in touch. If you have a link with La Mare and have old school books, end of year reports, photographs, trophies or other items from your time with us please get in touch. Any items loaned to us for the exhibition will be displayed on the day and then returned to their owners. We want to try to get a range if items and artefacts to represent the entire history of the school."

The primary school has been working with the high school on a range of activities and celebrations to take place over the course of 2024, and will be highlighting more on their social media accounts.

Anyone who wants to submit an item for open day can email [email protected]

The open day itself will be taking place at the school on Friday 10th May and members of the public who are interested in visiting will be able to come along to the school between 9am and 11am.
