SRMC funds STEM scholarships for Voorhees University

Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), the liquid waste contractor at the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site, recently presented a $10,000 check to Voorhees University to fund science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) scholarships.

Voorhees, located in Bamberg County near SRS, is one of South Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Founded by Elizabeth Evelyn Wright in 1897, the university is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Episcopal Church and the United Negro College Fund.

Eye on the target: Dave Olson, SRMC president and program manager, said that he is keenly interested in helping young talented students stay focused on their studies.

"Funding scholarships at Voorhees is another way that SRMC continues to build our partnership," Olson said. "Their studies should be their top priority, not the financial obligation of paying tuition, and these scholarships make their education more affordable."

Campus visit: SRMC multimedia services lead Lindsey Kennedy and senior industrial hygienist Rometta Washington-Riden joined Olson at the university and discussed with the students their background and careers at SRS.

Voorhees University's president Ronnie Hopkins said that SRMC's donation and campus visit to talk to students would have a long-lasting impact on the university.

"Dr. Olson's office arranged a face-to-face meeting with me to identify opportunities that foster a beneficial partnership between Voorhees and SRMC," said Hopkins. "The check presentation was unexpected, but the donation will serve our students well. I look forward to our continued partnership with SRMC."
