Road Construction Updates

As the city of Aurora improves its infrastructure offerings to its current and future residents, demands for more infrastructure, improvements and repairs also grow. On any given work day, there can be as many as 100 active work zones within the city.

Traffic engineering staff do make an effort to minimize the impact of these work zones to the traveling public. In addition to reviewing and approving the plans to ensure they are safe and compliant with all regulations, staff also work with contractors to seek alternatives to street closures and minimize the number of lane closures and their duration. Staff also try to keep conflicting work zones from overlapping in time or space. In most cases, these efforts are successful. However, on occasion, alternatives are not available and since we are dealing with the outdoor environment, even the best planned projects get delayed by weather, special events or unknown conditions, resulting in confusion and/or unplanned congestion.

Other Road Construction Work (weather delays may be expected for all work zones)

In-progress Projects

I-70 full closure
Both directions of I-70 between Tower Road and Colfax Avenue will be fully closed overnight May 13 (8 p.m. to 5 a.m. westbound and 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. eastbound) to complete work on the new High Line Canal Trail pedestrian bridge over the interstate. Follow the signed detour route, which will use Colfax Avenue between Tower Road and Gun Club Road. Expect slow traffic.

11th Avenue full closure
Both directions of 11th Avenue between northbound Del Mar Parkway and southbound Del Mar Parkway will be fully closed from May 6 to 13 around the clock for improving drainage. Follow the signed detour route, which uses Havana and 10th Avenue.

Southbound Airport full and partial closures
The full closure by a private developer of southbound Airport Boulevard between 22nd and Colfax avenues will continue around the clock through May 14. The duration of the closure was required to be extended to repair a large water pipe that was damaged. Expect delays, and follow the signed detour route that uses Smith Road, Chambers Road or Tower Road. Also, southbound Airport Boulevard between Smith Road and 22nd Avenue will have two through lanes closed through May 14.

Mississippi and Havana lane closures
A private development project affecting both directions of Mississippi Avenue between Fulton and Joliet streets will have two through lanes closed around the clock from Nov. 20 to June 14 to maintain infrastructure as part of a private development project. In addition, southbound Havana Street between Kentucky and Mississippi avenues will have one through lane closed around the clock from Nov. 20 through June 14 for the same reason. Expect merging and slow traffic.Gun Club Road full closure
A private development project has closed both directions of Gun Club Road between Sixth and 10th avenues through June 26 around the clock for the installation of new infrastructure. Follow the signed detour route, which uses the I-70 frontage road/Colfax and Stephen Hogan Parkway/Sixth Parkway between Picadilly and Powhaton roads. Plan for delays.Northeast Aurora road closures and improvements
(view map for aerial view of closure impacts and alternate routes)
-56th Avenue between Monaghan and Hudson
Both directions of 56th Avenue between Monaghan and Hudson roads will have a full closure from July 15, 2023, to July 15, 2025, around the clock due to extensive road damage. The replacement road is currently being designed. Follow the signed detour; use alternate routes. The detour route uses Monaghan Road or Imboden Road between 26th Avenue and 56th Avenue.
-Hudson Road between 56th Avenue and 26th Avenue
Both directions of Hudson Road between 56th and 26th avenues will have a full closure from July 15, 2023, to July 15, 2025, around the clock due to extensive road damage. The replacement road is currently being designed. Follow the signed detour; use alternate routes. The detour route will use Monaghan Road or Imboden Road between 26th and 56th avenues.
-56th Avenue between E-470 and Jackson Gap
A private development project affecting 56th Avenue between the northbound E-470 ramps and Jackson Gap Road will have intermittent lane closures both day and night on weekdays and weekends until late July 2024 to construct enhanced traffic flow. The new eastbound alignment on the south side of existing 56th Avenue should be completed toward the end of July 2024, and eastbound and westbound traffic will then switch to that alignment while the existing alignment will be reconstructed. Please use caution and consider alternate routes.

I-70 Picadilly Interchange

The right shoulders on both east- and westbound I-70 between mile markers 287 and 288 will be closed for the foreseeable future.

Please be alert: Don't follow trucks into the work zone. Trucks will be exiting off eastbound I-70 and directly into a temporary work zone west of Colfax Avenue (Exit 288). Slowing to below 45 m.p.h. near the railroad bridge east of the Tower Road interchange, they will then exit onto the shoulder to enter the work area.

Due to Start Projects

Havana and Mississippi lane closures
An Xcel Energy project to perform gas line maintenance will affect both directions of Havana Street at Mississippi Avenue, resulting in multiple lanes being closed from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily from May 20 to July 3. Use alternate routes; plan for delays. All left turns will be prohibited. Bypass route for avoiding this intersection is to use Peoria, Dayton, Alameda or Jewell.

Northbound Chambers partial and full closures between Colfax and Smith
A private development project affecting northbound Chambers Road between Colfax Avenue and Smith Road will have one or more lanes closed from May 20 to June 5 to maintain infrastructure. Use alternate routes. This same stretch of road will have a full closure from May 24 to 31 for the same reason. Metro Water Recovery project may result in short-term road closures

As part of ongoing and routine wastewater treatment system maintenance, Metro Water Recovery is rehabilitating segments of corroded pipe within Aurora. The Aurora Westside Interceptor Rehabilitation Project is necessary to maintain about 23,000 feet of pipeline that runs from Parker Road and I-225 to Dayton Street and Smith Road.

The work performed by Inliner Solutions began in early September. Construction for this critical infrastructure will be limited to brief disturbances at 11 bypass locations. Short-term road closures and/or traffic detours may be needed along bypass pumping routes.

Affected locations in 2024 may be viewed on the project website.

East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit
The city and county of Denver, in partnership with RTD, the city of Aurora and CDOT, is moving forward with Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on East Colfax Avenue. This project is intended to move more people more efficiently and more safely along the Colfax Corridor.

Based on available funding, construction is slated to begin in late-2024, with the system operating starting in 2027. Buses will run down center transit lanes in Denver and on side-running transit lanes in Aurora. The city of Aurora negotiated an intergovernmental agreement with Denver to fund the design and construction of BRT elements along the Aurora portion of Colfax.

For more information on the project, visit DenverGov.org/ColfaxBRT.
