DEFIANCE, Mo.-Communication is key to many things in life-even turkey hunting. Spring turkey hunting season opens on April 15, but there's still time to learn the language of these elusive birds.

The Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) August A. Busch Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center is hosting an Introduction to Turkey Calling program Monday, April 8 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This free program is open to ages 11 years and up. It will help hunters decode the secret language of Missouri's wild turkeys and bring in that wary Tom.

This program will cover types of calls, how to use each call, and the different calls to make while hunting in different circumstances.

"Hunting turkeys is challenging and knowing what call to use and being able to use that call correctly can help your success rate in the field," said MDC Outdoor Education Supervisor Bryant Hertel.

Turkey calling is more than a few random strokes on a box or slate call. This class will show hunters how to make the right sounds at the right times to attract turkeys closer to their position. It will discuss the different vocalizations turkeys make and what those sounds communicate to other turkeys. The program will cover the strengths of various calling techniques.

TheIntroduction to Turkey Calling program is a free, but advanced online registration is required at http://short.mdc.mo.gov/4B8.

The August A. Busch Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center is located at 3550 Route D, approximately five miles west of Highway 94 in Defiance.
