Nominate a project, person or organization to be recognized for advancing sustainability in their local community.

USGBC is now accepting nominations for our 2024 U.S. Local Market Leadership Awards program. These prestigious awards honor projects, people and partners that demonstrate excellence in working to create better buildings and to improve the lives of all in their local communities.

This year, the program has two cohorts of participating markets, each with its own deadline for nomination submissions. Although all participating markets use the same nomination process, the awards are judged separately for each market. Applicants must be located in a particular market to be considered for that market's awards.

Nominations

Nominations are now being accepted for the two cohorts.

Award cohort 1

  • Nomination deadline: Aug. 19 by 11:59 p.m. ET
  • Eligible markets: Alabama, Colorado, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, Tennessee

Award cohort 2

  • Nomination deadline: Oct. 3 by 11:59 p.m. ET
  • Eligible markets: Arkansas, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois (project awards only), Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, West Virginia

Winners will be recognized nationally on the USGBC website this fall and celebrated locally at select Building Transformation Forums in October and December.

Project awards

Buildings, neighborhoods, communities and other built projects in the markets listed above that have earned certification under LEED or another GBCI program since Jan. 1, 2022, are eligible to be nominated for project awards.

Projects are reviewed by an esteemed panel of judges that represents leaders and stakeholders in the USGBC community. Judges have a variety of technical, market and sector perspectives and expertise.

Project scoring takes into account excellence in certification, goals, strategies, processes and synergies, performance, and lessons learned, and projects are also ranked according to significance in advancing the adoption of green practices in a specific location, sector or building use type.

Award categories include:

  • Design and Construction Award
  • Operations and Maintenance Award
  • Iconic Building Award
  • Decarbonization Award
  • Quality of Life Award
  • Ecological Conservation and Restoration Award
  • Rise to the Challenge Award

When applying, those who submit nominations are asked to select the award category that best fits their project. Awards may not be given in every category in every market. Project award nominations have an application fee of $50. Applicants from government or nonprofit organizations may request this fee be waived.

People and partner awards

Individual people and organizational partners who support USGBC's mission by advancing sustainability, resilience, equity and health and well-being in the local community are eligible for the Community Impact Awards.

The Community Impact Award categories are

  • Community Impact Award-individual: For an individual USGBC member who has demonstrated exceptional leadership or has made outstanding contributions to advancing USGBC's mission locally.
  • Community Impact Award-organization: For an organizational USGBC member, partner or LEED user who has demonstrated exceptional leadership or has made outstanding contributions to advancing USGBC's mission locally.

Community Impact Awards are available in all participating markets, with the exception of Illinois. There is no fee to nominate a person or partner for a Community Impact Award.
