The Chinese University of Hong Kong 22nd Honorary Fellowship Presentation Ceremony

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held its 22nd Honorary Fellowship Presentation Ceremony today (20 May 2024) on campus. Seven distinguished people, listed below in alphabetical order by family name, were appointed honorary fellows in recognition of their remarkable accomplishments in their respective fields and their exceptional contributions to the University and the wider community.

Professor Fok Tai-fai is currently Emeritus Professor and Honorary Clinical Professor of the Department of Paediatrics, CUHK. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong, he later obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from CUHK, specialising in paediatrics. He had worked at The University of Hong Kong, Queen Mary Hospital, John Radcliffe Hospital in the UK and McMaster University Medical Centre in Canada. He is also the former Head of Paediatrics at Prince of Wales Hospital. In 1984, Professor Fok joined CUHK's Faculty of Medicine (CU Medicine), working in crucial roles including professor and Chairman of the Department of Paediatrics, Dean of CU Medicine and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK. Throughout his tenure, he excelled in many of his undertakings and made exceptional contributions to the University and the faculty, further enhancing the University's position as a leading global institution. A specialist in paediatrics, Professor Fok has devoted all his life to research in child care, especially in neonatology. Professor Fok has contributed over 360 research papers to prestigious international medical journals focusing his research on newborn care, especially the prevention and management of respiratory conditions, newborn infections, newborn growth and medical education. He has received numerous accolades, including the 2003 Outstanding Paediatrician of Asia Award, Justice of the Peace and Silver Bauhinia Star honours from the Hong Kong government, and a number of teaching awards presented by CUHK and CU Medicine.

Professor Michael Hui King-man is Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Chair Professor of Marketing at the University of Macau, and Interim Director of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Economics and Management. Professor Hui earned his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from CUHK in 1980 and PhD in Marketing from London Business School in 1988. With 23 years of dedicated service at CUHK since 1996, he is the former Head of the Department of Marketing, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor. Following his retirement from CUHK, he is still serving the University as Emeritus Professor and Honorary Fellow of New Asia College. Professor Hui focuses on studying services marketing, consumer behaviour and cross-cultural marketing. One of his early papers has been widely recognised as the first services marketing paper published by the Journal of Consumer Research. Professor Hui had taken up various public service appointments including member of the Consumer Council, and was awarded the Medal of Honour by the Hong Kong government for his contributions to consumer education and protection. Despite his demanding teaching and research responsibilities, Professor Hui has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to serving others and the community. Even after assuming his current position at the University of Macau, he continues to take on new service roles and willingly shares his expertise with the general public.

Dr Barbara Kwok Pik-lin earned a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) degree in economics from Chung Chi College, CUHK. She later obtained professional accounting qualifications in the UK, Canada, mainland China and the US, and further earned a Master of Science degree from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a PhD in Finance from the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. A certified public accountant and a certified tax advisor in Hong Kong and the mainland, Dr Kwok also holds directorships of several limited companies and non-profit organisations. Over the years, she has made generous donations to support the development of CUHK. Her contributions include establishing endowments for scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships, as well as providing funds for research projects and exchange programmes. Examples include the CUHK Hong Kong Institute of Integrative Medicine; Dr Barbara Kwok Young Postdoctoral Researcher Travel Grants; and the CUHK Alumni Torch Fund. She has also made donations in support of a number of CUHK projects, such as procurement of equipment for CUHK Medical Centre and installation of a digital projection system at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Dr Kwok's contributions to communities in both Hong Kong and mainland China serve as a testament to her genuine concern for the overall well-being of society. She has engaged in projects involving poverty alleviation and supporting underprivileged students on the mainland, such as establishing scholarships for financially needy undergraduates with outstanding conduct and academic results at Sun Yat-sen University. She also donated to the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics to establish an academic exchange fund for its teachers and students to visit CUHK. She is the chairperson of the CUHK GBA Alumni Association, a member of the Planning Committee for the Setting up of Colleges at CUHK-Shenzhen, and Convenor of CUHK Convocation's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Working Group. In addition, she has also served as a member of the CUHK Council, convenor of the Executive Committee of the CUHK Alumni Torch Fund, an instructor at the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute InnoHub and many other important posts.

Mr Simon Lee Kwok-chung is an alumnus of CUHK's Faculty of Science. He graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree. He further obtained a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree from the University of London and completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws programme at The University of Hong Kong. Today, Mr Lee is a partner in two legal firms: Lee & So, and K.M. Tang & Co.. Equipped with a wealth of professional knowledge, Mr Lee has not only served the legal profession well but has also demonstrated his desire to give back to his alma mater by assisting younger students through various means. Recognising his years of dedicated service to the alumni community, he was elected first as a member of the United College Alumni Association (UCAA)'s executive committee and subsequently as chairperson of both the executive committee and board of directors of UCAA. He has played a pivotal role in spearheading various projects that have proven immensely beneficial to students, including the Shum Choi Sang Mentorship Programme and the United College Summer Internship Scheme. Mr Lee has made numerous donations to United College, establishing scholarships and providing support for student activities. He has served as the vice-chairman of both the United College Assembly of Fellows and the United College Endowment Fund Committee. Additionally, he has served as member of the CUHK Council and held the esteemed position of chairman of the CUHK Federation of Alumni Associations.

Dr Harry Lee Nai-shee holds a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College, London and a Doctorate degree from Brown University in the US. Currently, he is the chairman of TAL Apparel Limited, a pioneer and leader in garment manufacturing, producing high performance garments, supplying one out of every six men's dress shirts sold in the US market. Dr Lee is also the chairman of Tradelink Electronic Commerce Limited, a listed company that provides efficient digital business services, serving as an electronic platform for import-export administration and declarations. From 2010 to 2018, he was chairman of The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA), and is now its advisor and chairman emeritus. He advocates innovative development in the industry and firmly believes that education and technology can make it prosperous. He is a member of the Industrial Advisory Committee of the Research Institute for Intelligent Wearable Systems at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, where he shares his experience and knowledge of the garment industry with teachers and students. Dr Lee is also the Chairman of the Committee of Overseers of Lee Woo Sing College of CUHK, involved with the development of the College and the University. In 2019, he received an Honorary Fellowship of the Textile Institute in the United Kingdom. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the textile industry and the overall development of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong government awarded him an Officer of the British Empire in 1996 and appointed him a Justice of Peace the following year. In 2001, he was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star.

Professor Leung Yuen-sang earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at CUHK's Chung Chi College in 1972 and obtained a Master of Philosophy degree at CUHK in 1974. Professor Leung then ventured to the US, where he completed his PhD at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is currently an Honorary Fellow of Chung Chi College, Emeritus Professor in the Department of History and Director of the Research Centre for Contemporary Chinese Culture in the Institute of Chinese Studies at CUHK. In the late 1990s, at Professor Leung's initiative, the Department of History at CUHK took the lead in introducing Western public history and established the first public history course in Hong Kong that emphasised the integration of historical knowledge, theory and practice. Professor Leung has been involved in the academic policies and administrative works of the University and Chung Chi College, including as a member of the CUHK Council, a member of the Senate, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, the Director of General Education at Chung Chi College, a member of the Standing Committee of Chung Chi College, Student Visits Chairman of the Planning Committee at Chung Chi College and more. During his tenure as Master of Chung Chi College, he spearheaded several notable initiatives. Notably, he established the "S.H. Sung Creativity Award" and the "Dreaming Through Chung Chi Scheme", aimed at nurturing and encouraging the creative endeavours of Chung Chi students. Professor Leung's current research interests encompass Confucianism and Christianity in modern China; cities and cultures: Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore; overseas Chinese communities, and so on.

Mr Roger Luk Koon-hoo is a seasoned banker, graduated from The University of Hong Kong with a degree in Statistics in 1973 and obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from CUHK in 1981. He joined Hang Seng Bank in 1975, where he rose from a trainee officer to Managing Director and Deputy Chief Executive Officer before retirement. Since 1982, Mr Luk has played an integral role in compiling the Hang Seng Index and optimising its constituents selection process. He also introduced four major sector indices for finance, public utilities, properties, and commerce and industry, and involved in the launch of index futures, making exceptional contributions to the long-term development of the Hong Kong stock market. He is also a distinguished scholar and writer, and currently an honorary research fellow at CUHK's Hong Kong Institute for Asia-Pacific Studies. His articles offer valuable insights into politics, economics and finance, benefiting both academia and the general public. In 2017, he co-authored the book Alchemy: Milestones of Hong Kong Financial Development with Professor Victor Zheng Wan-tai, providing a comprehensive overview of Hong Kong's journey to become an international business and financial hub from 1841 to 2015. Mr Luk has held various public positions and has been bestowed the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong government and the Fellow Certified Banker designation of the Hong Kong Institute of Bankers, as well as being elected as an honorary member of the esteemed international business society Beta Gamma Sigma. He generously contributes his professional knowledge to the development of his alma mater, applying his financial and risk management philosophies to university governance, which was reflected through his former service on the CUHK Council and as the University's Treasurer, and his current positions as a member of the Committee of Overseers of S.H. Ho College and director of CUHK Medical Centre.
