The Toronto Police Service is requesting the public's assistance with an investigation into a fatal motor vehicle collision.

On Monday, March 11, 2024, at approximately 4:58 a.m., police responded to a report of a personal injury collision involving a pedestrian and a motor vehicle at the intersection of Lawrence Avenue West and Varna Drive.

It is alleged that:

  • a motor vehicle was travelling west on Lawrence Avenue West approaching the intersection of Varna Drive
  • a 54-year-old pedestrian was walking on the north sidewalk towards Varna Drive
  • the motor vehicle changed from the passing lane to the curb lane to overtake another vehicle
  • the driver lost control of the vehicle and mounted the north curb onto the sidewalk and struck the pedestrian
  • the pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital
  • the driver and three passengers remained on scene and sustained no injuries

The motor vehicle is described as a 2022 BMW M5, black with a matte finish, it also has a gray roof cargo carrier on the roof rack.

Shengquan Wang, 19, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

  1. Impaired Operation/Conveyance/Causing Death
  2. Within 2 Hours of Ceasing to Operate Conveyance is Impaired with BAC Equal or Over 80 mgs
  3. Dangerous Operation Causing Death
  4. Novice Driver - BAC above Zero HTA

He was scheduled to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre, 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Monday, March 11, 22024, at 10 a.m., in room 106.

Police believe there may have been witnesses in the area who may have dashcam or video footage of the incident. Investigators are asking any witnesses, or anyone with video of the offence, to contact police at 416-808-1900.
