Long Beach Celebrates Día De Los Muertos Downtown

Long Beach, CA - Families and friends are invited to remember loved ones who have died at Long Beach's lively sixth annual Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday and vibrant celebration of the cycle of life. Free festivities are planned from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, October 30, on Historic Pine Avenue.

"Long Beach is proud to bring back our annual Día de los Muertos event," said Mayor Robert Garcia. "It's a spirited celebration of life, culture and diversity in our community, and it's a great time for the whole family."

Long Beach's Día de los Muertos includes live musical performances by headliner Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band as well as a Jenni Rivera Tribute Band and The Como La Flor Band paying tribute to Selena. There also will be a showing of the Disney film "Coco," plus mariachi music, dance performances, face painting, trick-or-treating, a costume contest for kids and much more.

The performance schedule (subject to change) is as follows:

• 3 p.m. Mariachi Angelitas
• 2 p.m., 3:45 p.m., and between sets, DJ Las Chicas Tristes
• 5 p.m. Jenni Rivera Tribute Band
• 6:30 p.m. The Como La Flor Band's tribute to Selena
• 7 p.m., or just after dusk, "Coco" film screening
• 8 p.m. Poncho Sanchez
• 9:15 p.m. Aztec Dancers

"I am so excited to be continuing this amazing tradition and bringing the residents of the First District, and the rest of Long Beach, an incredible opportunity to celebrate Día De Los Muertos safely," said Councilwoman Mary Zendejas.

All activities will take place outdoors on Pine Avenue between 4th and 6th streets, with the main stage located under the Historic Pine Avenue sign.

In accordance withCOVID-19 health mandates, regulations require attendees to show proof of being fully vaccinated or a negative COVID-19 test. Children ages 2 to 11 who are not yet eligible for vaccines are required to show a negative test. Those who are unvaccinated need to take a test within 72 hours of the event (as early as October 27).

The City of Long Beach is strongly encouraging visitors to get tested prior to arriving to minimize potentially long wait times for on-site testing. If attendees are not able to get tested prior to arriving at the event, the City of Long Beach will provide free rapid COVID-19 testing at the event entrances as a last resort option.

All attendees age 2 and older also are required to wear facial coverings inside and outside - regardless of vaccination status - unless actively eating or drinking. Exceptions can be made for individuals with specific medical conditions or hearing impairment.
