Interserve's Compliance and Energy team helps customers ensure their buildings are completely safe and legal by offering an efficient one-stop shop for asbestos, fire prevention and water services thought to be almost unique in the facilities management sector.
The 320-strong team manages legislative compliance for customers and their estates by providing services including: risk assessment, training, preventative and reactive work, testing for Legionella, water management and asbestos surveys and removals.
The compliance team service 3,500 customers across the UK and carries out work at more than 15,000 sites per year. So far during 2020, the team's 160 field engineers have undertaken planned works at all of these sites, together with delivering more than 18,000 reactive jobs driven from issues they have identified while on the sites.
The Compliance and Energy team's major customers span from national UK Government departmental contracts through to hospitals, schools, universities and private companies - including one of Britain's leading public utility firms.
Following the Grenfell Tower fire, compliance in these areas is under the microscope like never before. Dame Judith Hackett, Chair of the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, published a review after the tragedy and concluded that there is 'a moral imperative above the legal one' that buildings are safe and feel safe.
Mike Sewell, Managing Director of Energy and Compliance at Interserve, said: 'We whole-heartedly endorse Dame Judith Hackett's approach and fully appreciate how crucial it is to get compliance right.
'Our breadth of compliance services makes us one of the only facilities management providers - if not, the only one - that can service all of a customer's compliance needs.
'Customers want and need a provider that can deliver these services in a joined-up way, whereby the whole compliance service is managed by one organisation from start to finish and with a single reporting process. This gives us a tremendous advantage to create efficiencies as well as a truly safe environment.
'We also deliver these services on a national footing. Customers that want this national delivery approach make up almost 30 per cent of our business.'
Another of the team's services includes asbestos risk management, which is an issue for many older buildings in the UK in both the public and private sector
Mr Sewell said: 'The days when the focus was to remove all asbestos have long gone because this in itself caused many risks and issues.
'We now apply a risk management approach of working safely around the material and properly identifying and containing it to ensure the building can be used safely.
'Where access is required or equipment requires replacement in areas where there is asbestos, we can ensure the asbestos is removed safely and carry out other compliance work across water and fire services, creating added value for our customers by completing multiple tasks at the same time. It's efficient, causes less disruption and makes fantastic business sense.'
The team also includes energy and sustainability services such as providing advice and solutions to reduce carbon emissions and deliver long-term energy savings via the use of building heating and ventilation systems and lighting improvements, through to providing water solutions that are both safe and environmentally efficient.
Mr Sewell said: 'We deliver a holistic, integrated compliance and energy service which means our customers can concentrate on their business objectives knowing their buildings are safe and compliant.'
