Society for News Design Honors for Print Design

For the seventh year in a row, The Times won the most awards in the Society for News Design's print competition. Work from 2023 won nine gold medals, 14 silver medals and 159 awards of excellence. The journalism and design were honored across desks, with major contributions from the Magazine, The New York Times for Kids and Opinion.

The nine gold medals constituted almost half of all the gold medals awarded in the print competition. The New York Times for Kids won in the Section Design category for beautifully illustrated broadsheets that aim to educate and inform young readers while never talking down to them. In the special coverage category, The Times won for reporting on Roe v. Wade and the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision, and the judges commended the coverage for its impressive use of infographics and eye-catching charts.

Other gold medalists were for:

  • "How to Grow a Garden" by The New York Times for Kids in the Story Design (Features) category;
  • "A Manner of Speaking" by The New York Times Magazine in the Illustration category;
  • "Old World, Young Africa" in the Photography category;
  • "India's Daughters" in the Photography category;
  • "Saying Goodbye to the Dead. (Again.)" in the Photography category;
  • "How The Legend of Zelda Changed the Game" in the Combination Print & Digital category;
  • And "Elon Musk's Unmatched Power in the Stars" in the Combination Print & Digital category.

Two staff portfolios won silver medals: the Staff Combination Portfolio and The New York Times Magazine Staff Portfolio.

In Opinion, Rebecca Chew won silver for her individual portfolio, which judges praised for its clean and minimalist design. Two Opinion pages, "How A Union Dies" and "Am I a Writer if I've Lost All My Words?," also won silver medals for their impactful, visually striking juxtapositions of typography, photo and illustration.

Tim Oliver won a silver medal for his sports portfolio, which judges said demonstrated a strength and versatility that captured the reader's attention and sparked intrigue.
