Hydro One awards five Black-identifying post-secondary students with its William Peyton Hubbard Memorial Award

Each recipient will receive a $5,000 academic scholarship and an opportunity to gain valuable work experience

TORONTO, June 6, 2023 -Hydro One has announced this year's recipients of the 31^st Annual William Peyton Hubbard Memorial Award, the company's longest-standing scholarship for Black-identifying students in Ontario. Each year, Hydro One provides five Black-identifying Ontario post-secondary students pursuing disciplines related to the electricity industry with a $5,000 scholarship and an opportunity to complete a paid work term.

This year's recipients are:

• Anjola Adewale, Forth-Year Student,McMaster University, Software and Biomedical Engineering (Hamilton, ON)

Anjola is a member of the McMaster chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, where she organizes events to enhance members' academic standings and job skills. She is an active volunteer in her community and is passionate about helping Black-identifying female students pursue their interests in STEM fields by facilitating coding programs.

• Spencer Arseneault-Deraps, Third-Year Student, Carleton University, Commerce and Supply Chain Management (Ottawa, ON)

Spencer is co-president of Carleton's Sprott Students' Management Association and is involved in the university's business community. Spencer participates in many extracurricular activities such as theatre, dance, and is an avid volunteer.

• Safiya Bakare, Third-Year Student, Ontario Tech University, Mechatronics Engineering (Oshawa, ON)

Safiya is a member of Ontario Tech University's Women in Engineering Sub-Society. Safiya is committed to giving back to her community and volunteers with the charity, Let's Talk Science in hopes of igniting the passion for STEM for the next generation.

• Eghemen Ehiagwina, Third-Year Student, York University, Financial and Business Economics (Toronto, ON)

Eghemen's passion for global economic trends stems from her experiences in her home country, Nigeria. Eghemen is a math tutor for students in grades 3 to 9, and tutors first and second-year undergraduate students in economic mathematics.

• Mahir Soufian, Second-Year Student, Toronto Metropolitan University, Computer Engineering (Toronto, ON)

Mahir is an active volunteer in his community, most recently serving as a youth leadership assistant at Toastmasters International, where he mentored participants to develop their public speaking and leadership skills. Mahir is passionate about using technology to impact his community in a positive way and always looks for ways to support and assist those in need.

The award was created in honour of William Peyton Hubbard, Toronto's first Black-identifying Alderman, Controller and Acting Mayor in the early 20^th century, and a trailblazer developing the hydroelectric power network in Ontario.

The William Peyton Hubbard Memorial Award is part of the company's One Awards program, a collection of initiatives that aim to improve Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the workplace and that support young professionals as they enter the electricity industry. In addition to this award, has signed the BlackNorth Initiative Pledge to achieve 3.5 per cent Black executives and board directors, and 5 per cent Black student hires by 2025.

Black-identifying students attending an Ontario college or university and have completed at least one year in the following areas are encouraged to apply: Electrical, Mechanical, Civil or Environmental Engineering/Technology, Computer Science, Forestry, Business or Information Technology.
