Hosts Cyprus set up group stage decider with Georgia

The Davis Cup by Rakuten Europe Group III event is finely poised after hosts Cyprus set up a winner-takes-all clash against Georgia in Pool A, while Monaco put themselves in a strong position to win promotion by defeating Ireland in Pool B on Thursday.

Cyprus, making their first appearance in this year's event, defeated Iceland 3-0 and captain Demetris Herodotou was happy with how his team took down their opposition without dropping a set.

Herodotou added: 'I'm confident that this team will perform much better tomorrow and hopefully secure advancement to the play-off stage without having to worry about further matches.'

Georgia, who overcame Iceland by the same scoreline on Wednesday, await the Cypriot side in Friday's Pool A showdown.

In Pool B, it was Monaco who put themselves in the best position to advance to the World Group II Play-offs after defeating Ireland 2-1. With Irish No. 1 Simon Carr showing what he is capable of after defeating Lucas Catarina 6-4 6-4, the tie went to a decisive doubles and it was Monaco's pairing of Romain Arneodo and Hugo Nys that prevailed.

In Thursday's other tie, Luxembourg overcame Malta 3-0. Should Ireland defeat Malta tomorrow and Luxembourg overcome Monaco, then organisers will have their calculators at the ready to work out who takes the short-cut to the next stage of the competition.

The two second-placed nations in both pools will fight for the third promotion spot to the World Group II Play-offs on Saturday.
