75 Volunteers graduate with CERT training for community

The Town of Cicero has gained 75 volunteers who as of April 15th, 2024 are part of Cicero's first certified emergency response team (CERT). Yesterday, Town President Larry Dominick celebrated this Town-wide accomplishment with a graduation ceremony at the council chambers.

"It's amazing to see so many people volunteer and that shows they're part of the community. Like I said in the meeting, I volunteered for the Little League for 20 years and had three teams a year. It gives you that good feeling after you do something," said President Dominick.

"So many nice people are here today, they graduated. I'm so proud of them. Everyone involved makes Cicero a much better community and that's what we're here for".

President Dominick also thanked Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle and Congressman Chuy Garcia for lending the Town of Cicero a helping hand and making the CERT program a success in Cicero.

During the graduation, there was a standing ovation for Town Chaplain Ismael Vargas who directed the Cicero CERT volunteers into completing the eight-week training program.

"I pick good people to lead things it makes my job easier. We work as a team no matter who it is. We work as a team and that's why we get things done," added President Dominick.

The CERT volunteers consists of Parent Patrols, clergy members and Town of Cicero department heads.

President Dominick even mentioned, "this is just the start we are going to have another class".

"This is not a celebration it's more than that. It is an accomplishment for our community," said Chaplain Vargas.

"We have to be prepared for situations, anything our Town might need. Have volunteers out in the street ready for any disaster that might happen".

Chaplain Vargas also completed the CERT training.

Also present handing out certificates was Town Clerk Maria Punzo-Arias.

"I want to start by thanking all the elected officials and staff in Cook County. You guys are the best. You've proven yourself during the flood and now," said Clerk Punzo-Arias.

"Ismael, Eddie, our police department and most importantly our Town President. There's not one thing that our Town President does not approve when he knows it's for the betterment of our community. We're very proud of our Town President and wanna give hime a big applause".

CERT trainers volunteered from all over the state of Illinois to train Cicero residents who were eager to learn. Today, President Dominick was able to meet and congratulate them. Cicero CERT volunteers are now prepared to assist the police and fire departments during any emergency. The Town is now prepared to face any disaster stronger than ever.

El Municipio de Cicero ha ganado 75 voluntarios que, a partir del 15 de abril de 2024, forman parte del primer equipo certificado de respuesta a emergencias (CERT) de Cicero. Ayer, el presidente municipal, Larry Dominick, celebró este logro de toda el municipio con una ceremonia de graduación en la cámara del consejo.

"Es sorprendente ver a tanta gente cómo voluntarios y eso demuestra que son parte de la comunidad. Como dije en la reunión, fui voluntario de la Liga Pequeña durante 20 años y tenía tres equipos al año. Te da esa buena sensación después de hacer algo", dijo el presidente Dominick.

"Hoy hay aquí mucha gente agradable que se graduó. Estoy muy orgulloso de ellos. Todos los involucrados hacen de Cicero una comunidad mucho mejor y para eso estamos aquí".

El presidente Dominick también agradeció al presidente del condado de Cook, Toni Preckwinkle, y al congresista Chuy García por ayudar al municipio de Cicero y hacer que el programa CERT fuera un éxito en Cicero.

Durante la graduación, hubo una gran ovación para el capellán municipal Ismael Vargas, quien dirigió a los voluntarios de Cicero CERT para que completaran el programa de capacitación de ocho semanas.

"Elijo buenas personas para liderar las cosas, lo que facilita mi trabajo. Trabajamos en equipo sin importar quién sea. Trabajamos en equipo y es por eso que hacemos las cosas", añadió el presidente Dominick.

Los voluntarios del CERT están formados por los padres patrulleros, miembros del clero y jefes de departamento del municipio de Cicero.

El presidente Dominick incluso mencionó: "esto es sólo el comienzo, vamos a tener otra clase".

"Esto no es una celebración, es más que eso. Es un logro para nuestra comunidad", dijo el capellán Vargas.

"Tenemos que estar preparados para situaciones, cualquier cosa que nuestro municipio pueda necesitar. Tener voluntarios en la calle preparados para cualquier desastre que pueda ocurrir".

El capellán Vargas también completó la capacitación CERT.

También estuvo presente entregando certificados la Secretaria Municipal María Punzo-Arias.

"Quiero comenzar agradeciendo a todos los funcionarios electos y al personal del condado de Cook. Ustedes son los mejores. Usted ha demostrado su valía durante la inundación y ahora", dijo la secretaria Punzo-Arias.

"Ismael, Eddie, nuestro departamento de policía y, lo más importante, nuestro presidente municipal. No hay nada que el presidente de nuestro municipio no apruebe cuándo sabe que es para el mejoramiento de nuestra comunidad. Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestro presidente municipal y queremos darle un gran aplauso".

Los capacitadores del CERT se ofrecieron como voluntarios de todo el estado de Illinois para capacitar a los residentes de Cicero que estaban ansiosos por aprender. Hoy, el presidente Dominick pudo reunirse con ellos y felicitarlos. Los voluntarios de Cicero CERT ahora están preparados para ayudar a la policía y a los departamentos de bomberos durante cualquier emergencia. El municipio está ahora preparado para afrontar cualquier desastre con más fuerza que nunca.
