Henri Cauvin and Michael Corkery join National

I'm thrilled to share that Henri Cauvin is joining National as a deputy editor and will edit coverage of crime, legal issues, immigration and the Mid-Atlantic. Henri most recently was a senior editor at ProPublica from 2018 to 2022. He edited investigative projects on a host of subjects, from the fatal consequences of Amazon's push for ever-faster delivery, to the lack of accountability in the NYPD's disciplinary system, to the deadly gaps in the U.S. food safety system.

Before joining ProPublica, he was city editor at The Times, where he started as an editor on the Metro Desk in 2013. Henri oversaw coverage of the New York Police Department, the state and federal courts in New York, and low-income housing and homelessness.

At The Times, he was the editor of Murder in the 4-0, a project that examined each murder in a Bronx police precinct over the course of a year to understand how and why murder persists in a handful of New York City neighborhoods. He also edited a groundbreaking investigation by Ben Mueller, Rob Gebeloff and Sahil Chinoy that refuted the Police Department's longstanding public explanation for the persistent racial disparity in marijuana arrests.

Reporters who've worked with Henri rave about his strengths as a mentor and shaper of stories: "He's thoughtful, ambitious, hardworking and kind," says Emma Fitzsimmons, who was edited by Henri on Metro. "He's good at considering our blind spots and encouraging us to cover communities that we don't cover enough."

Before joining the Metro Desk at The Times, Henri worked at The Washington Post as a reporter and editor. Prior to The Post, he had his first stint with The Times, reporting from South Africa, where his wife, Rachel Swarns, was the paper's bureau chief.

At The Post, The Times and ProPublica, Henri worked on efforts to increase newsroom diversity and improve mentoring. He's a member of the NABJ and IRE.
