The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has inaugurated Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) and Special Assistants (SAs) in 5 local governments of the state; namely Akoko Edo, Etsako East, Etsako West, Etsako Central and Uhunmwonde.

The Governor, during the inauguration which held on different occasions in Akoko-Edo, Auchi and Edo State Government House, on Monday 30th October 2023, charged the new appointees on the need to be diligent and accountable in carrying out their duties, while stressing on the need for women inclusion in leadership roles.

Addressing the newly appointed SSAs and SAs in Akoko Edo, Obaseki said: "As your Governor, I will do as much as I can to make sure Akoko Edo gets its rightful dues in Edo. For the government and the Governor to do more, we must know what is going on here. I must have eyes and ears on the ground, who are able to give information daily to the Governor's Office on what is going on in the state and the state's projects.

"Today I am inaugurating you so that we can start a new process; a process for the state taking a lot more interest and action in what is going on in Akoko Edo, and working closely with the local government to make sure that we develop this local government.

"You cannot work as my Special Assistant or Senior Special Assistant if you are not living here, because I need you to give me information to let me know what is going on in your community and ward on a weekly basis. Politics for the sake of politics means nothing. Politics has to be for development. Politics that does not help bring infrastructural development is wasted politics."

Addressing the SSAs and SAs in Etsako East, Etsako West and Etsako Central local government areas, Obaseki noted: "I cannot be everywhere all the time. I cannot tell which teacher has come to school in your community. I cannot tell whether a leader is sick or has challenges. Somebody needs to tell me. It is only when we can go round and mobilize at the grassroot, can we really reach our people. So, your appointment is not for free, it is a call to duty; a call to work.

"You are not going to sit at home. You are going to operate from the local government headquarters. I must get monthly reports through your Commissioners. You are reporting to me directly. You must know what the government is doing in your area. You must be the one telling the people what we have done and what we have planned to do. You are the state government in your various localities. Let us tell the people what is going on."

"Politics is to help us develop. Politics is not for only us politicians. We must make sure we get the government to work for the people, and that you make sure you communicate what the government is doing for the people", the Governor added.

Also charging the newly appointed SSAs and SAs from Uhunmwode Local Government, Obaseki stressed on the need for them to operate from their ward, as anyone not doing so would be replaced. "Anybody who is not in their ward, and does not operate from there, please let us know so that we can give the work to somebody who lives there", Obaseki said.
