City Projects

North End pavement replacement project

A contractor working for the City will remove and replace street pavement, water lines, and ADA-standard sidewalk ramps on various streets in northern Yuma, roughly between Avenue A and 4th Avenue. Reconstruction work will take place on east-west roadways Colorado Street and 2nd Street, and on north-south roadways including 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th avenues. Local streets will be closed to through traffic, but access will be maintained for residents who live in the closed section. Detours will be available via 1st Street and 3rd Street. This project is expected to conclude in summer 2024.

Paving is currently scheduled as follows.

• Nov. 30 and Dec. 1: 2nd Avenue from Avenue A to 4th Avenue.
• Dec. 4-5: 10th Avenue from 1st Street to Colorado Street.

Additional work may take place in the following locations:

• 6th Avenue from 2nd Street to 3rd Street.
• 2nd Street from 5th Avenue to Avenue A.
• 3rd Street, 9th Avenue to 10th Avenue.
• 10th Avenue and 3rd Street intersection.
• 4th Street and Avenue A intersection.
• 1st Street, westbound right lane closure from 5th Avenue to 10th Avenue.

25thStreet, 5th Avenue to 8th Avenue

A contractor working for the City is installing new water lines from 24th Street to 25th Street between 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue. 25 Street is closed to through traffic between 8th and 4th avenues, and local traffic only is permitted on 5th Avenue, 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue between 24th Street and 25th Street.

Avenue 5E, 37th Street to 40th Street

A contractor working for the City is installing water and sewer lines on Avenue 5E between 37th Street and 40th Street, plus new fire hydrants and new service connections, followed by pavement replacement. Avenue 5E will be closed to through traffic between 32nd Street and 40th Street, and to all traffic between 37th Street and 40th Street. Detour using Avenue 4E or Avenue 6E. This project is expected to be complete in early spring.

3rd Street, Avenue A to 13th Avenue

A contractor working for the City will install water and sewer services and conduct concrete work and asphalt patching on the north side of the Sanguinetti Athletic Complex, resulting in a closure of 3rd Street between Avenue A and 13th Avenue. Detour using 5th Street. Work begins Nov. 27 and is expected to conclude by late December.

Notice to property owners will be delivered 48 hours in advance by the contractor. Property owners are asked to please adjust their watering schedules away from days their street is being worked on.

Other utility projects and encroachment permits

Avenue A, Parkview to 28th Street (Yuma County)

A contractor working for Yuma County is working on the Smucker Park flood control basin, which will at times affect Avenue A between Parkview Loop and 28th Street. The sidewalk on the west side of Avenue A is closed. Motorists on Avenue A should be aware of trucks entering and exiting the roadway on the north side of the park.

Later phases of work will include lane restrictions on Avenue A and a closure at Westridge, currently anticipated for early 2024. Message boards will be activated 72 hours prior to any such closure.

16th Street, Avenue A to Pendergast (SW Gas)

Pipeline replacement work will create lane and sidewalk closures along 16th Street between Avenue A and Pendergast Avenue. Work zone is expected to be active 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. Work should be complete by the end of December.

Fiber optic installations (Allo)

Communications line installations will take place in areas designated for utility easements within the City limits and surrounding vicinity in the following areas:

• 16th Street and 1st Avenue.
• Las Lomas Street and 14th Avenue.
• 12th Street and 14th Avenue.
• Arizona Avenue and 30th Street.
• 10th Street to 13th Street, 1st Avenue to 10th Avenue.
• 1st Avenue, 22nd Place to 27th Place.
• 17th Street and Dora Avenue.
• 14th Avenue and 15th Street.
• 12th Street and Avenue B.
• Hettema Estates.

Maiden Lane, Main Street between 1st Street and 2nd Street (Yuma County)

Through late fall, a contractor will be conducting demolition work and right of way utility work. The project will prompt road closure of Maiden Lane between 1st Street and 2nd Street, and the closure of 2nd Street between Main and Maiden. Traffic control will be in place for detour route. Drivers are advised to drive with caution. Access commercial parking lots via Gila Street.

32nd Street, Avenue B to 21st Drive (Southwest Gas)

Southwest Gas crews will conduct gas line replacement work at various locations of 32nd Street between Avenue B and 21st Drive. Work will prompt a lane shift, and reduced speed limit of 25 mph. Work is anticipated to be completed by late December. This project has been restricted to night work between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

32nd Street, Avenue 8E (Southwest Gas)

Through late January, Southwest Gas crews will replace gas lines for construction at Midpointe Plaza at 32nd Street and Avenue 8E. Work will prompt outside lane closures.

16th Street, Pacific Avenue (Century Link)

Telephone line repair work will cause lane closures at the southeast corner of 16th Street and Pacific Avenue between Sept. 11 and Dec. 11.

Gila Ridge Road, Avenue 3E (contractor)

Utility and road work on a new truck stop will cause lane shifts on Gila Ridge Road west of Avenue 3E through mid-December.

24th Street, Pacific Avenue (Century Link)

Telephone cable repair work will prompt lane closures of eastbound 24th Street at Pacific Avenue. This 30-day project should complete in early January.

4th Avenue, 28th Street (SW Gas)

Gas line leak repair will create a northbound lane closure of 4th Avenue at 28th Street. Work should be complete by the end of December.

28th Street, 4th Avenue (Spectrum)

Line and pole work requiring a trench will lead to lane narrowing on 28th Street east of 4th Avenue. Work should be complete by late December.

40th Street, Avenue 3E (SW Gas)

Through late December, Southwest Gas crews will work on infrastructure along 40th Street (County 12th Street) east of Avenue 3E. Work will cause lane restrictions for approximately one block.

Giss Parkway, 4th Avenue to 1st Avenue (Fishel)

Telecommunications line work will prompt a closure of the right eastbound lane of Giss Parkway between 4th Avenue and 1st Avenue. Completion is expected at the end of December.

4th Avenue south of 40th Street (APS)

Conductor line removal and replacement will cause lane closures and traffic directed by flaggers on 4th Avenue and Airport Loop south of 40th Street between Jan. 8, 2024 and Feb. 3, 2024.

Avenue 9E, 24th Street to Roadrunner (Southwest Gas)

Through late December, Southwest Gas crews will work at the canal crossing of Avenue 9E between 24th Street and Roadrunner Lane. Traffic will be reduced to one lane over the bridge, directed by flaggers.

16th Street, Maple to Arizona Avenue (Spectrum)

Jan. 8-10, 2024, the right eastbound lane of 16th Street will be closed between Maple and Arizona Avenue, and the adjacent sidewalk will be closed as well, for open trench work and conduit placement.

Avenue 2-1/2E, Palo Verde Street (Century Link)

From early December through mid-January, telephone cable repair work will prompt lane closures of Avenue 2-1/2E from Palo Verde Street to just north of Ironwood Court.

Avenue B 14th Place to 16th Street (APS)

Pole and wire installation will require a temporary lane closure on northbound Avenue B between 14th Place and 16th Street the week of Dec. 4-8.

24th Street, 21st Drive (Spectrum)

Line work requiring a trench will lead to lane narrowing on eastbound 24th Street at 21st Drive. Work could start in mid-December and should be complete in mid-January.
