Medibank through our Amplar Health business proudly employs almost 700 nurses around Australia, providing care in person and virtually for both Medibank customers and the broader community.

CEO of Amplar Health, Dr Andrew Wilson said, "It's an important day to reflect and acknowledge the extraordinary commitment and dedication of our nurses working in health across the country. I have worked with nurses my entire career, in hospitals and community settings- they are what makes the health system great." He added, "We wish all of our nursing colleagues a happy International Nurses Day, we should all take some time to celebrate the profession's achievements and the impact of nurses on the lives of individuals and families."

The theme for International Nurses Day 2023 is Our Nurses. Our Future, aimed at profiling what nursing in the future looks like in order to address the global health challenges and improve global health for all.

Dr Wilson says it is an apt theme, "We are committed to improving the future of healthcare by delivering innovative models that support the sustainability of the system. Nurses are crucial to the success of these models- adapting to visiting patients in the home, delivering care virtually, working in partnership with allied health, connecting patients to other community services and supporting patients to consider prevention programs."

Amplar Nurse, Carissa Fraser who visits patients in their home agreed, "Gone are the days of nursing being solely about working bedside in a hospital- the profession has changed in response to the way Australians want to receive their treatment."

Carissa's story about how she became a nurse reflects her passion and is a great example of how the profession has already started to evolve. "I didn't become a nurse until I was 37. My journey started when my grandmother was unwell. I would drop the kids to school and then I would go to Nana's and support her all day. Watching her go from home to the hospital environment was hard. When she was at home she was so much more comfortable- I managed to keep her in her house for five years. After caring for Nana in her own home, I decided I wanted to study nursing and support others to have care where they feel most comfortable."
