Falua compra Quinta de S. José no Douro para ganhar escala internacional

The wine company Falua, which produces in the Tagus and Vinhos Verdes regions and which is part of the French group Roullier, acquired the majority of the capital of Quinta de S. José, in Ervedosa do Douro, municipality of São João da Pesqueira, district of Viseu, thus giving shape to another important stage in its strategic, national and international expansion.

Quinta de S. José, located in the Douro sub-region of Cima Corgo, has a total area of 20 hectares, 15 of which are dedicated to vineyards, and is part of the area classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The first record of the farm dates back to 1892, but the project as we know it was initiated by João Brito e Cunha's family, and developed by the winemaker in recent years. João Brito e Cunha will continue to be linked to Quinta de S. José, joining the Falua team.

The Roullier group's objective in the wine sector is to "gain scale and dimension", Falua administrator Rui Rosa told Lusa: "We started with 15 hectares of our own land and today we have 300 hectares; and with 20 workers who currently number a hundred".

The main markets, in addition to the national one, are England, Poland, Switzerland, Brazil, the United States of America, Canada, Japan and South Korea.

Quinta de São José's journey in the production of Douro wines "already has high national and international recognition", highlights the company, in a statement, so the wine tourism (accommodation and tastings) already carried out on that property will also be continued.

Antonina Barbosa, general director of Falua, highlights that "this acquisition represents not only the expansion of Falua to other regions, but also the reinforced focus on differentiated terroirs, which are already a hallmark of our group".

"It is with great enthusiasm that we enter the emblematic Douro region and embrace this new project", he states. "We are committed to excellence in viticulture and oenology, and this is yet another challenge that motivates us to explore Douro wines and their history, as well as to expand our know-how", he concludes.

Falua, now part of the Roullier group, started in the sector in 1994 in the Tagus region and expanded, in 2020, to the Vinhos Verdes region with the acquisition of Quinta do Hospital.

The Roullier group has a turnover of 4.1 billion euros and more than 10 thousand employees in 131 countries spread across three continents, diversifying its activity in different areas such as soil and plant nutrition, algology, extraction of minerals, plastics, energy production from biomass and the agri-food sector.
